Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

yea dont shoot for 150 hp. thats like.... 1990 toyota camry territory.

shoot for 400+ with a 383 na or if thats out of the budget, go 350 + nitrous.

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

you could always see how much boost and nitrous the duke could take, then drop in the 350.

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

i can agree with these guys, first off, 150? our 8 bangers come stock with more than that, i know u got a four cylinder and in theory half the horses. but yes nitrous its cheap, you can convert it to your next motor, and it would definatly be worth seeing what that four banger could push, your takin it out anyway so might as well push the limits. nitrous is cheap and turbo's come a dime a dozen in the junkyards. read stickys to find out how easy and cheap ths really is.

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

No, 150hp in that car wouldn't make it very fast. It's still pretty heavy compared to the 150Hp camrys. The 4cyl camaro, as you know, is the bastard child of GM. It has no performance aftermarket, and for good reason.
Why not consider swapping in a junkyard barebones 350? Just a basic, running, stock 350? You can upgrade that as time/cash allows. Should be able to make it happen for $500-1000. I wouldn't drop a dime into an iron duke as is. You just won't get enough out of it to make it worthwhile. Lets say you drop enough cash to get it to 150HP, that same amount of cash would probably let you swap in an LG4, or a truck 350, and you'd have a crapload more torque with either of those, and the ability to go UP from there.

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

sonix has an excellent point but if i guess right you dont have time or experience to do an engine swap. i had a chance to pick up 2 race motor 350's mildly built for 300 bucks. i would get in touch with someone who knows where to find these things. a junkyard is a great place to start, but then you dont know at all what your facing. but, a 350 or even 305 would be very fun compared to that 4 banger

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

My 91 rs was sick, that 3.1 engine had to much hp. It had an exhaust, intake, bigger einjectors, adj fuel regulator, underdrive pully,no cat,and nos. I beat v8's with it. And everyone made fun of me, untill i raced em of couarse.
I know of an 88 mustang with a 4 banger, the thing runs low 9's its turbocharged. It will pop a wheely half way down the trak. Look into a turbo! Be different.

yes u can,but how are u going to tune it???
how much power can the engine handle before u need to upgrade things like rods/crank/pistons???
can u do ur own fab work?

i dont know much about the 4cyl motors but this is all things u would need to find out before hand.im deff one for doing things differently, but depending on how well that 4 banger can handle the extra power, it may just be a mute point.
atleats the v6 motors are good for 400 hp in stock form minus the factory pistons anyway.
to do a turbo on that motor i could add up a few things in my head u need real fast and u would already be over 500$'s without fab work

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

can i ask why you insist on keeping that iron duke running and trying to build it up? the cost for a turbo lines intercooler and exhaust would put you into high 200's horse almost 3 with a 350

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

u would have to find out what ecm that motor uses, though buying a megasquirt unit would prolly be ur best bet as u can transfer it over to a v8 engine.
id have to see pics of the engine, but u would either have to get a header made to hook the turbo up, or depending on how the ex system is u may be able to get a flange welded onto the ex manifold or pipe.
ill try to find out some info on the motor and to see if it can even handle extra power or boost for that matter

but i still think u are better off leaving it alone, but ehh after what some of us have done with the v6 motors i could be wrong

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

The iron duke is a pretty stout engine, and will take a fair amount of abuse.

GM developed a lot of performance parts for it back in the '80s, mostly sold for the Fiero, even had a SuperDuty 4 valve per cylinder dual over head cam conversion, not sure if that one actually made it to production, but Pontiac Perfomance did a lot of engeneering on it. Great article in Hot Rod Mag about it back in '86 or so.

I would not be afraid to put a turbo on one and run it. To keep costs down, I'd probably use an RRFPR, to add fuel, if it wasn't enough an additional injector or two, would work well, and since it still runs a dizzy, a MSD 6BTM, would be a good choice for control of the spark, which can also be transfered over to other engines later on.

I don't see anything wrong with starting with what you have, at the very least you're going to learn a lot, and maybe even get more than the performance that you are looking for.

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

I would have to vote for N2O.
Used it will cost less than a junkyard turbo.
You can move it to a V8 when the time comes.
It's easy to hook up.
You don't need to do much tuning, maybe none to get 150HP.
and if you decide 150(total) isn't enough, just jet it up.

BTW, I always head that the "Iron Duke" was a pretty hearty motor. I wouldn't be surprised if it could reliably handle 75 to 100 HP of N2O...if you retard the timing and run good fuel.

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

search ebay, pretty much any wet kit that has a nozzle will work they are all pretty much universal. wait is the iron duke a carb or fi??? if it it carb it might be a little tricky finding a nitrous kit but fi they are all mostly universal unless it is a plate system. but i got a nitrous kit the said id was for a "94-99" mustang and it works on my 87 2.8 camaro for only $300 on ebay. also it doesnt really matter what size of the shot the kit says because you can just buy new jets to what ever size shot you want. and they are onyl like $4.

im gonna go no a limb here and say you dont know to much about cars. if so a turbo is porbally gonna be to much. and if you dont have enough money to drop in a v-8 you porbally wont have enough to get a turbo, thats why i think nitrous is gonna be your best friend here. its def the best bang for your buck also.

try something like this:

Re: HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

do kids make fun of your car because of the engine, or the flames... j/k

but if your on that much of a budget, then for now i would just work on a really nice tune up and get it running at tip top shape, cause your going to need it to last. possibly get a compresion check and then see where your at. becuase if you throw nitrous or a turbo or anything of the sort on a poor tuned car its probally not gonna last to long.

QFT!

That's quite the limited budget. If it were me, I think I'd be planning a little more for the futur than worrying about putting parts in my car, with a limited income such as you have.

Hey 02, you can also do anything & everything possible to drop the car's weight - it's like adding power, but (most of the time) it doesn't cost anything but effort. If you're interested, you can also check out MHTG.net for some thirdgenners that are local to ya...

BTW - I loved the coffin!

The best thing you could do now would be to learn to use the search button and spend about 2 weeks just reading, do the same on turbomustangs.com.

The car looks like it's in great shape! (minus the flames)
