Turbo 305tpi finally runnin

Finally got all my **** together, roughly tuned and (most) of the qwerks worked out. First few WOT rides were scary, first blew 2 rockers off, then had multiple vacuum caps blowing off and even blew the charge pipe off once. Car is running at 9psi right now.

1985 LB9 block, rebuilt hyper pistons recond rods - basically stock.

Comp cams 212/218 with 115lobe sep, .444 lift.

Ported L98 heads (64cc) with guideplates, studs and 1.6 roller rockers.

Ported TPI base / plenum, stock runners

Adj FPR with Ford 24lb SVO injectors

Snow performance Meth injection.

BBS Single turbo setup, 3" downpipe with AEM Wideband and cutout

Pics!!

Enjoying it while I can, got Mich Tech bill coming up, might have to part with it.

The downpipe has a clamp where it connects down by the transmission. Undo the clamp and pull the downpipe out and from there its a cakewalk. The A/C delete box helps a ton with that. I was even able to get the bulky *** connector for my compression tester in every cylinder on that side.

The car is an automatic so the BOV is hardly ever used. The only time I see it being used is perhaps at the end of the 1/4 mile when you let up.. but the momentary richness is not an issue.

Dunno.. the long term plan is to get a megasquirt or convert the ECM to '749, so hopefully that MAF wont be around too much longer

When you got WOT and then let off the car doesnt stall or shut off with the BOV after the maf? my buddy's car had problems with that when he put the BOV in place of the recirc. valve.

Stock MAF, stock '165 ECM. I handle the fueling through the PE vs RPM table as the MAF maxes out fairly quickly.

About $1,500 and a lot of learning along the way.

Haven't had any problems with it yet. If I had to take a guess I'd say its because the MAF is far beyond maxed out most of the WOT pull, so when you let off its just going from its 254gms/sec maxxed out value to somewhere lower on the chart. I guess it would probably kill it if the MAF could read to 500gms / sec and then it dropped from 500 to 200, but going from 254 to 200 is a lot less shock if you get what im saying.

I actually did the A/C delete before I even had the turbo... the thirdgen A/C setup is a terrible design and I hated it. Made everything on the passenger side inaccessible. I work on my car way too much to deal with that crap.

nice looking setup!!! i would recommend using rubber instead of silicone on the charge pipes. and put some small zip ties on those vacuum lines and caps. i run 20psi on my shadow and never had a charge pipe pop off with the rubber.

I wound up using the next size too smal vacuum cap for each nipple and slowly heating it up with a propane torch until I could just barely get them on. Theyre not going anywhere now!

As far as the charge pipe goes I believe its because I still have a screw type clamp on that one and need to get a TBolt style clamp like the rest of the pipes.

It's a 61mm wheel with a T04s .70 A/R compressor housing.

Nice work. I'd like to know what you are using for the turbo exhaust manifold as well.

Might be the location of the MAF and the turbo thats allowing him to run an open blowoff. My SC'd car when I'd let off (MAF before the SC) it would die as soon as the blowoff opened up.

Go for the 749. It works great. Im very happy i didnt spend a ton of money on an aftermarket ecm setup. My car drives like a factory turbo car. By the way, your car looks good. Same header as mine.

Re: Turbo 305tpi finally runnin

That setup looks great. Some lacquer thinner on the pipes for cleaning followed by some hair spray for stick might keep the pipes from blowing off. T-bolts would fix it also or some small welds to form a lip at the ends.

With a Wideband you can fudge the MAF tables up to a point for boost. There are tricks you can play with the code & tables for the over-fuel upon left-off. MAP systems also work well. All systems have weak & strong points.

92RS(real slow),
A few people mention that they wish BBS still made a manifold. BBS has said many times to email them if someone is serious aobut buying one. Most of the time it seems that people just want to talk about buying one....kind of like a comfort blanket...and wish it was there if they ever wanted to buy one. Send BBS an email.

Re: Turbo 305tpi finally runnin

what did you do for your PCV system . MY BBS kit is being put on right now . I was going to use a catchcan then run it to the intake pipe. I just got my headers ceramic coated ( turbo is aswell) . I too am going to use the MAF ( 165) setup to get it running ( only running 4 psi for now ...to tune it ) PE vs RPM is all you tuned so far ? How does it all work at part throttle , etc .

PS ...congrats on your car being in GMHTP TurboTPI

For the PCV both valvecovers have breathers now. Eventually they will both get changed to hoses that go to a catchcan with a breather.

Originally I just left the drivers side in with the check valve and the passenger side was a breather but this lets un-metered air into the intake which whacks up your tuning.

Re: Turbo 305tpi finally runnin

do you have a wideband o2 gauge? i dont see how you could have a good safe AFR under boost, i had to bump my PE way up on my SD setup and had the FMU set to max, this was with 30# /hr injectors on my 305 TPI procharged with 10psi of boost, now i'm running the 7749 code with 42lb/hr injectors what a difference, cant wait till i hook my methanol injection back up, but good work, looks good.

Re: Turbo 305tpi finally runnin

I've wasted a couple lunch hours looking already: How loud is it when the wastegate starts venting in the engine compartment? It doesn't apear to be plumbed into the exhaust. Keep in mind I'm older and find N/A flowmasters too loud.

With the cutout open you don't really notice it, but when you putz around with the cutout closed you can hear it. It's not ear shatteringly loud, but it just sounds BAD. Sounds like a really bad exhaust leak. One of my goals is to plumb it back to the downpipe, and I recommend anyone else do the same.

another thing you could do is just fab a "downpipe" just for the WG about 8-10 inches with a "turndown" on the end, sounds much better that way though going to the turbo's DP is more desirable, but requires more work

WOW
Your GTA looks just like mine intake color and everything, except gauges and window tints... But mine is a little more beat up but still looks good from a far. I had the MAF setup in my car also and hated it. I will say the same about converting it to 7749 ecm. Alot better than the MAF setup.

awesome car.

Axle/Gears: posi disc 3.23's
Re: Turbo 305tpi finally runnin

question for anyone that knows it, how would you convert a 730 ecm to a 749?

TurboTPI, you are running a 10bolt 3.23 rear and havent had any problems with those hp numbers? do you only run street tires?

also, does anyone know what stock exhaust manifold it is that you modify (flip upside down and modify) to work with a turbo?. i read about the manifold a while ago, but cant remember (C4 maybe).

twin turbo is the goal

Very sharp looking car. So have you had any drivability issues or fuel problems with the car? Always curious how well the mass airflow cars run with turbo's. I am sure you will put some good numbers down.
