JY turbo choices
Re editing this now, ended up winning 2 GN turbos in great shape off ebay. Guess it pays to spell "grand national" correctly
. Anyways now I need to pick out a BOV, and some headers that will work for this setup. Seen v8 s10 swap headers used in the past, any thoughts? Also need to pick out a fmic, probably going with the ebay one for $100 IIRC, I'll have to run a search for the one that everybody on here has mounted up front. Any tips, etc would be great as I am not familiar with turbos and have been a nitrous guy for almost a decade now.

Re: JY turbo choices
from what i have learnd you would want a turbo from a comparable sized diesel... a 6.5L turbo is great for a single turbo setup... duals would suck probably wouldnt see decent boost till 6k
get that holset turbo off the 5.9... that is probably the best

Re: JY turbo choices
well he's running 2 of the 6.5L ones and makes boost around 3500 which is about where I'd want boost to start as well, then he shifts it at 5500 and it seems to run really well.
Re: JY turbo choices
Understand that you should have them looked at once you recieve them, most used turbos are on their last leg so take that into account when budgeting.
I understand the fear some people have about the SSAC turbos, but if you look at TurboMustangs, lots of people have them with good results.
Just my $.02, but why spend the same money on something used (maybe beyond repair) when you can get a new one for the same price? I did lots of research before making my decision to get an ebay version of a to4e (t3/t4 hybrid). I had a pair of Garretts that were going to be used origionally and dissasembled one along side the xs power one I got and the internals were identical.
Once you get the turbos fabbed on there, It's an easy swap to a Garrett once you get the dough to spend on them.
If you are willing to spend the cash, I suggest looking into the GT series.
Talk to ttypecamaro or junkcltr, they both have jy-type setups on their SBC.
What are you using for fuel management?
Glad to see you thinking of making the jump to FI, I don't think you will be dissapointed

Re: JY turbo choices
hahaha....FI, no no no. It'll be a blown thru carb setup. Already have 1/2" lines, pump to keep up, and a boost referenced regulator. Got everything done to the carb already for boost besides drilling out the PCVR holes in the metering block, everything else is boost ready, floats, etc. Now just trying to figure out the turbo situation, I figure worst case is buy a pair of turbos for $300 and build the system around that and if I have to pull them to get rebuilt or buy new ones I can do that later on. This will be a fall/winter project for me if I go through with it after all the research. Otherwise I'll just go heads and cam on a ls1 with the carb setup on top.
Re: JY turbo choices
Not FI as in fuel injection, FI as in Forced Induction!

Also, what made you decide blow through vs. draw through?

Re: JY turbo choices
seems that everyone is making DIY blow through setups rather easily. At least I think they've been called blow through and not draw through. Basically goes from the turbo to the intercooler to a carb hat on top of the carb on the engine. Been doing nitrous for years and years on vehicles and besides one friend who does buick turbos, figured I'd learn something new and try it out for some fun on the street/strip.

A well built SB with a pair of turbos can see 1000hp, is that fun enough?
If you plan on intercooling, you want blow through so fuel doesn't sit in the I/C.
I have seen a v6 that had a 4bbl carb in front of the turbo, though, it was kind of interesting.

Re: JY turbo choices
definitely won't run any fuel through the intercooler or the turbo. I'll be using those FMIC that I see on ebay that everyone has been having great success with.

Re: JY turbo choices
Ended up winning a good condition GN turbo on evilbay, so now I just have to hunt down one more and see where I end up with that search.
Got a lot more reading to do about twins on turbomustangs.com
Any advice or comments let me know thanks.

Re: JY turbo choices
Firstfirebird's post is excellent advice. He has been doing a great job building and researching. I run a pair of T3 units with 60 trim comps and .63 A/R turbines using modified stock TPI manifolds. I like the setup but will be moving to a Holset 70mm unit in the future because I got it for cheap and want to try out a single non-water cooled unit. Mostly because I just like building stuff.
Lots of people have success with Ebay turbos. All that I have read shows that the quality has improved greatly. In choosing the right turbo........it all comes down to what type of application you want. It is much like a cam. Go big if you want wild street high rev performance or small for low RPM performance.
For the 305ci 4x4 truck I went with twin 45 trim comp, .48 A/R turbine T3s. The 350ci street car has twin 60 trim, .63 A/R turbine T3s (will become Holset 70mm). The 350ci plow truck is getting a custom exh. manifold for at T6 Garrett GT 70mm with an adapter for a Holset 64mm. Gotta see how I like each unit before picking one for full time use. As you can see, boost is addictive. I am throwing it on all the rigs. You will like it......extra power for free after the install. No bottles to fill.
You can't go wrong with a couple of GN turbos on a 350ci.

Re: JY turbo choices
ended up winning 2 gn turbos back to back in 2 days for relatively cheap prices. So now it's BOV choices and intercooler choices. Also which headers are good to go with ? I was thinking of s10 v8 conversion headers flipped upside down.

Re: JY turbo choices
A couple of GN units for a 350ci is a score. The corvette manifolds are a good choice. Do a search for JoBy's setup. He used them. You could also make some with mcmaster-carr weld-els. For the pair it would cost $250-$300 and would be strong and last forever. Fab time would be longer but they would flow better. The pair of GNs are good for 700HP so I would do the weld-els if you have the time and want that kind of HP out of them.

Re: JY turbo choices
I looked at JoBy's setup on his website, but there wasn't many definitive pics of what he's done. Can I get some more info on the mcmaster-carr weld-els?
Re: JY turbo choices
I was just shopping for bends to build a set of foward facing headers.

Re: JY turbo choices
nice find first, but lemme give ya a lil advice dont buy that header kit, u would be better off buying a bunch of u bends or jbends instead. which is all u will need.
also stahl headers makes flanges for the 60* motor for 40$'s a set i think unless ur gonna have ur buddie machine u a set

Ues, my bud will be machining d-port flanges for me - actually I will probably do the iron head flanges myself on the drill press, and make 3 individual flanges (only a matter of three holes
). Re: JY turbo choices
u only need to make 1 set of flanges, dont make d port flanges 1.5 inch tubes/with flanges with 1.5 holes clear the d ports.
also the bolt spacing between the iron/aluminum heads is 1/8 th eack side. so if u make flanges for the iron heads and slot the bolt holes out 1/8th each side they will bolt onto the aluminum heads
[/hijack]
