are t3 turbine housings interchangable?
Can you bolt a garrett t3 .63AR turbine housing onto a turbo originally equiped with a garrett t3 .48AR turbine housing or do you need the matching turbine wheel too?

As long as both turbine wheels are the same trim (stage), then the housings can be swapped. Simply measure the major and minor diameters of the wheels will determine if they are the same.
If you don't have the wheel for the donor housing, simply measure the diameters of where the wheel sits in the housings and make sure they are the same.

Re: are t3 turbine housings interchangable?
sounds easy enough. thanks
Re: are t3 turbine housings interchangable?
what six shooter said.
but anyways i quess ur brothers car is getting a turbo again?
if u can swap out to the .63 id be interested in that .48 housing if its for a stage 3 wheel

Re: are t3 turbine housings interchangable?
I think it will be less work on myself if I just slap the turbo on it and keep the boost low. Maybe i'll stick the flapper open so he can't boost it right away...shhhhh.
The only problem is that the .48 requires the Chrysler flange, but you could have that too (304 SS)... I'll measure the turbine wheel maybe tomorrow. We'll have to see how the turbo reacts with the .48 first. He bought a compressor upgrade that is supposed to work because everything is supposed to be balanced separately on this turbo. The compressor is still a .42AR machined to accept the t4 60 trim wheel. It should spool quick but it might choke pretty quick too.

Re: are t3 turbine housings interchangable?
the compressor shoould no longer be a .42 if it was machined out to accept the t4 wheel. it prolly more along the lines of an .50-60 ar now.yeah a .48 may choke the motor above 4k on a single turbo setup. im going with twins so i want to ditch my .63's
how fast did that thing used to spool with the single .48 t3? im imagining pretty fast considering the .63 i had was pretty fast from a dig and instant from a 20mph roll

Re: are t3 turbine housings interchangable?
it took like 2 seconds to get to 5 or 6 psi. I consider that slow compared to my car, that seemed to flash right to 7 psi and climb from there. It had a few leaks in the weld (fixed now), but nothing to make a difference... I think the t3 50trim compressor wheel was just way too small, and the shaft was humming out of efficency! I actually suspect that the wastgate almost never opened. We treid to add springs to the actuator and the boost didn't change. I checked for charge leaks and blow-by all the time because I was sure it was one of them. I think the old intercooler leaked too. All that stuff added up in small doses might account for the troubles we had.
I measured the small compressor wheel and its a true 49 trim, close enough to 50. kinda like the ebay turbos measure out to be a 44trim (1.990"/3.000"), so you call it 46(2.003"/2.950")trim even though they advertise 57trim(2.1??"/2.950").

yeah the last ebay turbo i measured happen to be 2.075/3.100 i think which worked out to be a 50 trim.
and though a t3 will boost on a 3.1 it ids way undersized, the upgrade to that t4 is going to make a very noticable difference.
though in all reality a worked 3.1 would be really good with a t61

Re: are t3 turbine housings interchangable?
but I don't consider a 3.1 with a small-to-medium cam and fancy alloy pistons "worked." no head work other than matching springs and new seals... and 1.6rockers if they count.
The motor is sitting on the driveway in a bag to be put in tomorrow... so we'll find out a lot of answers soon enough.

Re: are t3 turbine housings interchangable?
I'm pretty sure its a stage 1 turbine shaft.
