As i creep closer to getting this project started

I have come up with my main plan. I plan to get a spare l98 from a friend, get it machined and done to a 383, then put new heads on it which ones I am unsure of. then keep the TPI intake cuz I love the look and finish it off with a s/c. My problem is picking the right heads cam and I can figure out a s/c after that. Im goin for a solid 500-600hp on the s/c. And no its gonna be a drive to the store and drag strip car really. Anyways i got all my other stuff underway for this just tryin to figure out the rest. Should i just get the l98 heads ported? or will it not be big enough? Maybe some ls2 heads?

ls2 heads aren't from the same motor generation, they won't work. I'd imagine a quality blower and some AFR heads or similar would get the job done easily.

Yep, what he said! LS2 heads are different. I would reccomend some AFR Eliminator 195's, and something like a D1SC or F1. You might also want to invest in an aftermarket tpi base and runners or upgrade to something like a HSR.

EDIT: if you're looking to do alot of racing you might want to invest in an aftermarket engine management, like the holley commander. It's about $800 and will plug right in.

Depemding what you are looking for budget wise, HRS makes some decent heads price wise, but if you are looking for aluminum you will of course save weight but shell out more cash.

Well. I will do the heads. And yes i will be buying upgraded TPI intake parts for it. I just like the look of the intake. That management system sounds like a good idea. when you mean plug in, how much plugging in is there?

Also what would be a good cam to run along with?

If you want 500-600HP then I wouldn't bother with heads. Maybe just port the stock heads. Size the S/C properly and you should be fine for that HP level.
