150 shot on a 10.75:1 compression

Okay First off, I want to state that I am in the process of buying a ignition box for my car. I was told it will help with the compression ration im going with.

Next I want to know how I can use the ignition box and which one to use on my motor to get it prepped properly for a 150 shot. Im guessing I need to retard timing 3-5* for the shot. I dont want to be having that timing retarded all the time. I know there are ignition boxes that will do that automatically, but I dont know what to look for in it or whose a good brand besides msd.

My dizzy is msd and so are the wires, So i thought i would keep it all the same, but I heard summit is making good stuff at an affordable price.

Please help me out here guys

I am thinking about selling it.

Will that do what I need with the timing.? I know mallory is a good company, but it is all compliable with the msd crap?

Re: 150 shot on a 10.75:1 compression

if you have MSD you may want to stick with it to ease in the wiring swap and be uniform by using all one product. MSD and Mallory both have similar ignition box setups but wiring is different...different colors and such but you can mix and match if you compare both wiring diagrams for mallory and msd. But the dizzy should have the same basic outputs as the stock unit which works for both ignition boxes so it may not matter which box you get

I just bought a Mallory 685 and it has a retard function that you can wire into the nitrous setup. It will retard any number of degrees you program it to whenever the nitrous is activated. its activated by 12 volts so you wire that into the nitrous activation switches or w/e. So it only retards whenever the nitrous is activated MSD does have a similar setup...i just dont know which model it is. Browse their website for information on their products to see which units have that feature.

I both companies have a box with that feature built in but they also both have timing retard modules that are seperate from the ignition boxes that you can wire into the ignition box and motor

i would be more worried about detonation from high compression and 150shot.. also, rule of thumb is 2* per 50shot..

Re: 150 shot on a 10.75:1 compression

i was under the impression that being near 11 to 1 doesnt matter with nitrous as long as the timing is retarded enough? I know there are plenty of guys running bigger shots on more compression than that

Just run good timing and colder plugs. Should work ok. I hope to run atleast a 150 shot on my 11 to 1 motor

Re: 150 shot on a 10.75:1 compression

It is more detonation prone with high compression. Retard timing, use a cooler plug, and keep a high octane fuel for use with the nitrous! I know if I use a 150HP shot on my 10:1 engine i'll be running 94+ octane fuel in the my nitrous cell, vs the 91 in the gas tank.

Re: 150 shot on a 10.75:1 compression

thats what i was planning... possibly race 100 octane in a cell for nitrous and retard the timing an extra 2-3 degrees more than normally recommended. running 93 octane in the gas tank for the motor

but then again, LT1's are 10.5 to 1 and they have run 200 shots just fine with colder plugs and timing retard on regular 93 octane..so maybe it will work ok without the higher octane fuel cell

LT1's are a completely different animal with the reverse flow cooling. We also can't compare our traditional SBC's to small DOHC engines, whole different ballgame.
