How much power can it take before it explodes?
Assuming, forged rods and pistons, its been micropolished and checked out to be in top notch shape.

 

i assume u mean a cast crank, id say bout 400hp to 450 but thats kinda pushing it...but even though i say that there will be someone that comed along behind me and swear that it will take 600hp...so here is my 2 cents buy this...http://store.summitracing.com/partde...2&autoview=sku rated for 500hp and ive seen dyno builds with it in 700hp motors....very strong cost efective crank.....

 

Yea, I was looking at that... I already have a crank with all the machine work done BUT I figure if I am going to be shooting for 350+ (300 whp is my goal) and then dumping a 150-200 shot of nitrous on top of that I had best get me a crank that can take a small grenade...

yeah and if u have that crank already u can sell it and make back about half the cost of the scat one if not more.....

 

I think the stock crank would be fine assuming you dont rev past 6000. But I would pick up a scat crank nonetheless.

 

yeah thats another thing the rpms, thats really the kicker, but the scat 9000 series is rated to turn 7k also....

 

Nobody knows when your crank will fail. Mostly anywhere after 400hp for a stocker. Manufacturing tolerences will make every one different and so does your car/driveline and driving habits. 700hp motor will keep a stock crank just fine if it is never driven hard.

The question should be why would you put decent rods and pistons on a stock crank?? Save the extra cash and buy at least a 5340 crank. Stongest rods in the world won't hold together a crank breaking. Good components are only as good as the weakest link. Why waste all that money in vain to save a couple hundred?

 

gm stuff is actually pretty good, granted there are a quite a few things to look at like has been said i know a couple people making over 700hp on stock 2 bolt bottom ends

 

I would rather not spend a bazzilion dollars, the cast steel crank will do fine for me. I am going to use scat forged stock rods as well as they are a good deal and they should be good for 500+ hp, the motor will not spin past 6K. I am planing on some quality Wisco pistons and hellfire rings though.
I dont want to buy the entire motorsports industry and I think perople get stupid when building engines with parts that are designed for more power than they will ever make. Its not "assurance" its called emtpy your wallet. I know what I want my enigne to do and i dont see a reason to buy a $700 crankshaft that can take 1000+hp when I only plan on making 400-450. I know, the pretty shiney factor, I have built a few engines (This being my first 350) and have spent way more money than I should have on all sorts of components and then get a cam that is "Smog/street freindly"

yeah i went through the same issue b4, thats y i looked up the scat 9000 series crank tough enough for most any street engine....it also comes down to people thinking an awesome street engine needs to be 500+ hp...a good 350hp 350 will put a grin from ear to ear on ya when put in most camaros... thats all i want from my motor 350hp and a 100 shot of juice for the ocasional jaunts at the track....its all about low end torque, thats what rules the streets.....have fun man i think yout on the right track and will build a good quality engine.....

 

yup, your build project sounds "reasonable" I am not sure how many people on here have tried to drive around with insaine amounts of power on the street but its not allot of fun and the noise gets old after a month and your stuck with a loud expensive gass eater...
I had a civic (God will fogive me) when I was younger that I gutted down to 1800lbs and put a naturally asperated 230 whp twin cam rice burner I built in it. 7Lb aluminum flywheel and a kevlar/ceramic clutch... Real pain in the @ss to drive on the street/traffic and the noise killed my ears. Eventually got pulled over and inspected (I am a CA resedent) and ended up parting it out. Good riddance.

 

Who's telling you that a cast crank isn't good enough? I wouldn't reuse the stock one with a 200 shot of nitrous, but a scat crank would be fine.

The scat one in your case WOULD be "assurance".
