LS1 turbo questions
My friend has an 88 rs with an LS1. He is wanting to put in a single T72 turbo w/intercooler when we get back from Iraq. I think it should be large enough for a stock LS1, but changing to 60 lb injectors and having it dyno tuned. He is only planning on 6-8 psi boost. He has not ordered anything yet..... he wants to make sure everything is going to be what he needs. We would appreciate any input.
He already has an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, walbro pump, modified exhaust, and is going to get custom made turbo headers if we can't find some.
Thanks

Re: LS1 turbo questions
at those pressure levels stock LS1's do ok. But be prepared to change a lot of head gaskets if you go up into the teens. Thats my previous experience with turbocharged LS-1's from several years ago.

Re: LS1 turbo questions
That combination sounds a little missmatched. That turbo is probably capable of around 900hp/700rwhp, but the injectors are only good for about 600hp/480rwhp, and the fuel pump will probably peak out around 500hp/400rwhp.

Re: LS1 turbo questions
Any ideas on what may be a more rounded combo. Trying to stay at low boost levels since this is a stock engine and a daily driver. The goal is only around 450-500 rwhp, any more will be fine, but nothing to extreme.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: LS1 turbo questions
Well, to get the fuel supply up to the turbos max. output I'd do 83-95lb injectors and two of those fuel pumps. I'm at about 650rwhp and my aeromotive 1000 pump is doing all it can just to keep up, and the 95lb injectors are right about at their end unless I up the fuel pressure, which would require more fuel pump to keep it there.

Re: LS1 turbo questions
It would need a new bottom end for that much boost. Right now he is thinking twin walbro 340's for fuel and the 95 lb injectors.... room for future upgrades. I found a kit on the net, but am wondering everyones opinion.

It looks like it has everything needed, but what would the "hidden costs" be?
We appreciate the help. Thanks.

Re: LS1 turbo questions
If all he's wanting is 450-500 Hp he should check out STS. Also there is a lot of info on ls1tech about turbocharging. ie. Truck manifold setups ect.

For your goals a MPT-70 Turbo would be tons. As for your fuel system, 60LB mototron injectors will be more then enough, at LS1 58psi fuel pressure, guy's are making 800+RWHP on those injectors.
For a fuel pump, The racetronix "Hotwire" Pump is an excellent setup, and will do more then enough for your power levels.
As for turbo headers, 4th gen f-bodies have a different engine bay shape, and the 4th gen turbo headers wont fit in the thirdgens. Alot of 4th gen guys use reversed truck manifolds. I was planning the same setup, and found that they hit the subframes. Your best bet is to buy GMPP Flanges, and fabricate your own headers & Downpipe.

Re: LS1 turbo questions
I have 2 friends that are running boosted stock bottom end ls1. The all stock one is running a 255lph in tank and a areomotive 1000 with 60 lbs injectors and 8lbs low boost and 12lbs on track trim. the other car is running same fuel set up and loyd elliot heads stage 3 and a turbo cam with stock bottom end and 15lbs street and 20lbs strip on 106 oct and a snow kit. if all he wants is 450 to 500 that can be done all motor with heads and a cam and bolt on with a very small shot of NO2.

Re: LS1 turbo questions
He is stuck on wanting a turbo.... I just found some info on sizing turbo's. I just have to finish making sense of it. He is about to order the injectors and fuel pump. The headers shouldn't be to bad, I've made headers on N/A engines. I was just looking up about the truck manifolds I seen on here.
Thank you all for the info. You have all been a great help.
