Going turbo ?'s

well after planing on building a new motor for sometime and originaly was going to spray ive changed plans and decided to build a front mount single turbo setup. im going to fab up all the piping on my 305 thats in the car now and would actualy like to see it run with 5-10lbs itself before i finish the new motor. ok now the questions are gona start....i've never messed with anything like this and know nothing about what i need to get turbowise and line plumbing carb fuel ect. all the exhaust and intercooler piping will be fairly easy just need help on everything else. would like to have a 3-3.5in dp to easily mate to my 3.5 i have now. ill be using a set hooker shortys for my driver side and im going to flip the passengerside one over and see what all i need to cut and weld to make it work. if i cant mod the header on the turbo side i will just build a simple 3in log style header. anyway any help or advice will be apreciated.thanks

Re: Going turbo ?'s

just build a log on the passenger side right off the start.
#1 it will be stronger
#2 its easier
#3 will give u more room for the downpipe

before u build anything pick out ur turbo and wastegate and get them

Re: Going turbo ?'s

I got a BBS single turbo log header you may be interested in. Works well with smaller motors thats for sure.

masterpower T64-T70 would probly fit that motor well

Re: Going turbo ?'s

what are your goals with the motor? 350 with what kinda power numbers? I think the BBS manifold is good for up to 550-600whp or so.

T70 sized turbo on a 350 is a good match for that range

Re: Going turbo ?'s

looking to go easy low 11's high 10's. i know with a good turbo setup i should theoreticly go faster but im not 100% on what power levels of turbo thats why im researching and asking plenty of questions before i jump in.
----------
put it this way i was going to build a n2o motor shooting for 450-500 crank hp then spray with 150-200.

Re: Going turbo ?'s

i had a 383 with nitrous making 400 whp n/a and with a 150 shot i estimate 520whp. Ran mid 11's on motor at 118-119 in summer heat, mid high 10's at over 127 on a full bottle shot.

so with high 10's low 11's as a goal, thats near 500whp which is pretty easy with a 350 and T70 turbo.

There was a guy with a L98 with 6lbs boost going as fast as me on motor so thats about 400-420 whp. Few more lbs and your in the 10's

Re: Going turbo ?'s

id like that to be a start and as i get more familar with boost id like the ability to up the boost or easily upgrade turbos if i decide to go faster.
----------
when i do start my motor build i plan to make it fairly strong to handle higher boost levels i prob will not go more than 10 on the 305.

Re: Going turbo ?'s

Well get your goals in mind and build the motor as strong as you can. Then select the turbo that will fit those goals in mind. If your looking for low 11's to start then keep increasing boost to shoot for mid low 10's or whatever you want, then you have to make sure the turbo setup will cover that range.

A hot 350 with mild boost on a T70 sized turbo will do your 11's and easily allow upgrading to the 10's with more boost. But there will be a point you will max out that turbo. Maybe a T76 would be better suited for the deeper 10's? You'll have to plan it out

Re: Going turbo ?'s

my .02 cents would be spend a little extra money (a little easier said than done sometimes) and buy a 76mm now and have the capability for 9's in full weight street trim down the road.
i have a .96 A/R turbonetics TC-78 on my 355ci. and it has very good street manners; spools as soon as my converter engages(converter's a little loose- 4k rpms or so) would def spool earlier on a tighter converter.
and as far as power goes, good for something like 800RWHP.
i ran mine on 7psi with 93 octane and the car would break the tires loose on 1st-2nd and sometimes 2nd -drive upshifts and usually just rolling into it at any speed in second(TH350) oh yea this is with 2.73's!!! and small MT slicks!!!

you wont regret going 76ish mm for a street car.
good luck!!

Re: Going turbo ?'s

yeah thats what i was thinking was going ahead and getting a 76. im prob gona start on it hopefully sometime next month. im gona pull the motor to put my new converter on the trans and clean the clutter out of the bay and rewire my ignition and fan repaint bay maybe regasket motor and switch to a wider lsa cam. also gota getthem long tubes outa there so i can start building my crossover and log. like i said before im gona run it on the 305 for now its not a very high compression motor only has like 3 or 4k on it to boot. still wondering on what fuel pump carb and fpr wideband ect to get lol.
----------
i do plan for it to be a street car full interior ect. i cruise with it most every weekend in the summer and maybe to work once or twice a week. went to most tnts last year but want to start getting more competitive this year.

Re: Going turbo ?'s

IF money allows, id go CSU for the carb.
any boost referenced fuel pressure regulator should work, i am having good luck with this one:
http://www.jegs.com/i/Aeromotive/027/13204/10002/-1

and i think the cheapest fuel pump to get you by for now would probably be a 255lph replacement pump.
i do not know at what hp level you would become restricted by stock 3/8" fuel line etc...
i run the complete aeromotive system. it almost broke the bank, but imho its worth it. i have not a worry in my mind up to 1,000HP.
(A1000 pump, -10AN line, etc...)

spend your money on the important stuff, you'll be glad you did, instead of buying cheap-okay stuff a few different times and hoping for the best.

good luck! post pics when you get started

2.5 or 3" will be ok for those goals. Log i'd make it 3" but 2.5" should work ok
