Is there any type of aftermarket part that allows me to put in a ram air intake?

 

Order a ram air hood with a functional ram air box? Other than that you have to make your own, such as cutting holes in the hood, bumper, or running piping down to the front of the motor (CAI/RAM AIR)

Anyways ram air is no good unless your speeding down the road at 70+ because the force of air still isn't enough for decent power until it becomes so little pressurized at the high rpm/speed your going at... If anyything its more of a look than a power adder

 

True. For the money, a CAI (Cold Air Intake) is better. I have seen a lot of them on ebay for really cheap (Around 40.oo). Dont know how good they are, though.

 

Thats what i thought but i just wanted to make sure efore i do anything. But here's a problem. No top end brands make CAI for the 87 GTA like K&N or AEM or any brands like those

 

Important** I wrote this as a guide for TPI cars, if your car is carbureted, youll need some kind of air bonnet such as http://summitracing.com/parts/SPE-98499/ or you can use your traditional black stock air filter and gut the interior of it (Removal of butterfly and plug the reference hole in the back)



no brands at all make anything for our cars usually =/ its gotta be all home made and fabricated... I like using spectre industries parts and custom make everything

What you can do is get an adaptor from the throttle body(dont know size) to a 4 in silione adaptor, than pick up part number # SPC 9751 which is 41 inches of flexible 4 inch hosing, more than enough to make a cold air intake, and than pick yourself up a 4 inch conical k&n air filter, as well as a few 3 and 4 inch wormgear hose clamps

All in all you got yourself one hell of a CAI for under $65, maybe cheaper if you pick up a walmart air filter or something

Thats why I recommended the E-bay CAI'S They DO look really nice. (Chrome finish and available in some anodized finishes.)

 

Cant I just take off the stock intake and put a cone filter straight on the throttle body?

 

Not on an 87 you can't That won't do any good anyway. More hot air will still make less power than less cool air.

My plan is to modify an lt1 cold air intake to work, or just to fab up my own. FWIW though, I went from a filter on the throttle body (mine is a 91) to a hacked together pos I made out of PVC pipe, to a true SLP cold air intake made for my car and noticed NO gains at all. Not on the butt dyno nor at the track. I plan to try one more time before I officially say that a near stock TPI car of any engine size doesn't need more air than the stock intake can flow. Once you make bigger modifications it will become a restriction but until then, spend your money on other things.

 

What you want to do is pull in cool air from outside the engine compartment to make the most power. Under 200mph, ram air effect is nill...

 

 

So if i wanted to make my own CAI, what type of piping should i use and should i get a air flow sensor?

 

i also would like to know how to do this. i was always under the impression that we couldnt easily make one because our MAFs are in the middle of the intake. could it be possible to just use the sensor with or without housing and just connect piping around it without throwing any codes?

 

I'm thinking that you could just drill an opening into the piping somewhere and bolt the old sensor on... maybe

 

give that idea up! have you ever tried to take a mass air flow apart? You cant, Trust me. I tried on an old one I had that was no good. once you get the top off, there are hidden screws under the circuit board and to remove them you better be good with a solidering iron. Even then hope is low it will work again

 

Disassembling a MAF is not really recommended. You could always put a pipe in parallel with the stock MAF and cut the ECM airflow tables in half. That would extend the range of the MAF and make a more free flow intake.

 

The MAF can be moved.

Maybe your thinking of the IAT? Its under the bottom of the upper plenum, near the middle. The stock IAT is merely a Water Temp Sensor. Get a real Air Sensor & put it in the air intake tubing. Gives the ECM a truer reading & the ECM can do a better job of management.

 

Note he said MOVED........not REMOVED, unless you do a speed density swap. Which reminds me........I need a computor for a SD car

I was just addressing a possible misunderstanding between MAF & IAT in the middle of the intake & the ability to move the IAT.

If you can find one that puts out the same signal in the same range. Maybe. But no idea if any tuning would be needed, but that would depend on increased air pr cfm of the reading it gives.

Sounds like you might be going ahead with trying to do something a bit out of youre league. Dont butcher up what may be a really nice GTA. Spend the time and effort on another high performance part.

 

And that is a big waste of money, Do youreself a favor, do a cat back exhaust or something that wont potentially mess up youre car,

 

Sounds like a plan. So for right now just stick with stock.

 

Hi, i have been wondering will a camaro tpi air cleaner setup work on a firebird has anyone tried?... it just seems that that setup lets cooler air on from the get go... i just bought a 92' formula bone stock no mods ect... and that stock intake has to go!!!

 

Absolutely not.

Not enough room between the hood & radiator wall and the hood latch no longer has a way to bolt up & hold the hood shut.

 

ok aside form the cold air setups i have seen what other options are there?

 

Cold Air intake, or aftermarket hood with the filter that mounts to the rad wallw & holds the filter. for a real ram air effect.

Those are you only options.

I was thinking about FYRCHKN's new hood....It would give the room needed, but not address the hood latch problem. Hod pins would fix that though.

 

Yeah after my little trip to the part store for a new steering wheel cover and return some defective brake pads I popped the hood and couldn't even touch the air cleaner housing so now I'm at the point its outta there asap...I like the after market hood deal but if I do that it will be before I gets new paint... been looking at pics of other tore bought and home made cold air intake setups and no matter what the filter seems that it needs to be completely separate from the hood and engine compartment to keep the filter cool...Anyone with pictures of setups would be great!!!

Yep. If the filter id getting air from under the hood, you've built a Hot Air Intake. Oxygen is what the engine needs & hot air = lower oxygen content.

Here's one on a LS1 3rd gen, but same thing...Put the filter outside, or built a wall separating it from the hot underhood air. It's on the opposite side, but you can do the same thing, just on the other side.

 

right on has anyone done a tube insulated by another since the heat is there its just the same as piping cold air through a hot pipe at the end its warm air instead?...

 

Considering the speed of the incoming air, the amount of heat that transfers from the tubing to the air going into the engine, would be negligible, so I wouldn't worry about that aspect. Just don't START with hot air from under the hood.
