Nitrous help

I am getting ready to start a camaro project and i had a few questions about nitrous.

This will be my first project and have been told you have to build the engine up a certain way if you are plannin on spraying it. If this is true, in what ways do you have to build it? Like what will i have to change or be sure i do for the nitrous to work.

Thanks

Re: Nitrous help

the search function on this site will be your friend. there are a lot of nitrous builds documented on here with tons of great information along with them, do yourself a favor and definitely take the time to read them, you may even learn some things that will help you avoid mistakes others have made.
Now with as little information as you've provided as to what you're intending to build, I can tell you the answer to your question depends on how much spray your engine will be seeing.

Re: Nitrous help

Allright, i will check out the other posts. But as for my car, it is going to be a 383 im going for around 400ish hp and then im gonna spray it with 100shot. This is my first project and ive been told compression and other things have to be certain ways if you want to use nitrous.

Re: Nitrous help

if you only plan on spraying it with a tiny 100 shot don't bother building it specifically for nitrous it'll be a big waste and you'll lose a lot of potential power off the bottle.

Re: Nitrous help

You won't really need to change anything with a 100 shot, but you can do other things just to play it safe.

Make sure you have a healthy fuel pump. Throw a splash of 100 octane in the tank to help with higher compression. Take out 2 degrees of timing to help prevent detonation. Make sure your wiring is proper. You don't need any accidental purges going into your engine at the wrong time. Make sure your ignition is in good shape (plugs, wires, coil).

Tank pressure is also key. You want it at about 900psi. That's what your jets are usually configured for. Too low and you'll run rich and weak. Too high and you'll run lean and could burn something up in your combustion chamber. A purge kit helps bleed off pressure. Bottle blankets and, if you're in a rush and CAREFUL, a little warmup with a propane torch helps boost pressure.

Handle nitrous like a handgun. In the hands of a careful person who knows what he has, nitrous is a great weapon. Be careless and you could blow your engine away.

Re: Nitrous help

Ok, thanks a bunch guys, and how much do you think a 100shot would cut down on 1/4 time?

Re: Nitrous help

I went from 13.70 at 98mph to 12.67 at 109mph on street tires. I didn't spray till 60ft to keep traction and still spun half of second gear (auto). It does hit kinda hard so be prepared. Both times had a 1.9 60ft.

Wow, allright, about a full second for you, that sounds good to me haha.

Oh and "Throw a splash of 100 octane in the tank to help with higher compression."

Are you saying im gonna need to run 100octane gas all the time?

Re: Nitrous help

It's a good idea to run a higher octane fuel any time you plan on using the nitrous. With mine I run 87 octane for normal driving, and when I plan on using the nitrous I put 91 octane in it.

Re: Nitrous help

Not all the time. I usually went to the dragstrip with a quarter tank and then threw $25 of 100 octane to boost it up a little. I've sprayed it on the street with premium with no probs. I just did it to be extra safe.

Are you gonna be carbed or injected?

My buddy whose carbed and juiced runs a separate 1 gal fuel cell under his hood with a pump and regulator strictly for his "wet" nitrous setup. That way he can run pump gas in the car and put high test in the fuel cell. When he sprays it, the nitrous kit pulls fuel from the cell to increase octane. It helps eliminate jetting changes and compression/detonation possibilities.
