FMIC Installs

I want to get my intercooler installed but I'd rather do it myself. Are there any threads dedicated to this? I have the Procharger 3 core intercooler. I'm sure I'll have to take my front bumper cover off, I am a visual learner so any help would be awesome

Re: FMIC Installs

The procharger 3 core is designed to be mounted Horizontal. I have heard that you can mount it vertical. Me and a buddy mocked it up but which ever inlet/outlet you put towards the top exits right at the high beam, so I am not sure how you would connect the piping. The offset inlet/outlet doesn't make it easy. To really do it you would need to get an intercooler with the inlet/outlet on the same side.

We put this one in without removing the bumper cover. just the plastic ducting behind the bumper and the plastic piece that goes from bumper to the radiator support.

He used an intercooler similar to the one in first few posts of this thread and mounted it similar, just without tearing the bumper off.

it's a Godspeed, he got it off Ebay. 3"inlet/outlet I forget the exact diameters maybe 30x12x3. Beater79TA is his name on here. PM him and he can tell you exactly.

Re: FMIC Installs

I mounted my ProCharger 3-core intercooler vertically using all the tubes supplied by ProCharger. I just had to get 1 extra rubber 90 to point the outlet of the intercooler down. (I did have to do some trimming of the bumper support beam though.)

Re: FMIC Installs

Does anyone have pictures of there trans am install? I have the procharger 3 core intercooler with the inlet down and outlet up. There's no where to mount this thing. I was trying to figure this out for an hour and ran out of daylight.

Re: FMIC Installs

So the 2 mounting brackets on the side is where I was trying to figure where they could go. Also I have no room for intercooler pipes other than re-locating the battery and mounting them through the battery tray on both sides. so frustrating

Re: FMIC Installs

That's what I did there too, the pipes are too large, they will not fit between the fenders and front frame structure. It simply can not be done, this was not designed for a firebird, or at least not a late model one.

Here's a bunch of pics of how I did it. I cut up a set of old pipes from the same set and modified them to fit, the pipes were later powdercoated. The fender support brackets were also modified, as was the hood latch support bracket (bottom trimmed down) and all powdercoated after. The 2 trays on the side of the car were cut, the evap canister was moved by cutting new holes for the retainer plugs (white square plugs)

The lower GFX panels had to be cut, one side the bumper was cut, the other side has the "scoop" modified. There's no other way it would fit. All in all it came out pretty clean. There was no getting around cutting and modifying.

Re: FMIC Installs

Right now my big issue is I dont have access to a lift and it's down right a pain in the @$$ to do it outside with the front jacked up laying on the ground. I guess the big ? would be is it worth it to add the intercooler now or wait till winter when I yank the engine? I do on the other hand want to add some pipe so I can use my surge valve though.
