Removing power steering pulley (pics)
Hey everyone, i am trying to get all the parts and stuff figured out so i can throw the 383 in. My problem is that my power steering pulley is aluminum, and i have previously tried removing it, and broke a little piece off.. so i stopped..
How can i get the pulley off with out having a custom one made?? I called procharger today and they said they have never heard of this pulley... WTF???!?!?! ummm. ok...
so if anyone has advise so that i can figure a way to get it off and back on a new pump with out breaking the pulley into pieces would be great..
Here is a pic of the pulley setup..

You need a puller, it clamps around the ridge on the front of the pulley and uses a large bolt to draw it out:

works like this:

Pull the pump, heat up the pulley and try again. Looks like crap quality if it breaks like that.

Heat is going to be your friend with that one... the aluminum will expand much faster than the steel, and if you get lucky you might be able to heat it fast enough that you can just pry it off.
I also have never seen an aluminum PS pulley...

Re: Removing power steering pulley (pics)
ya it is the pulley that came with the procharger... its a POS... i barely put pressure on a rib, and it broke a tiny piece off.. well when i need to swap pumps, ill try heating it up a lil bit...

When you use the tool I've found it VERY helpful to put a hose clamp around the jaws to make sure they can't slip off the pulley collar. And I mean VERY helpful.
The way the puller holds the arms in place isn't the greatest design and will deflect under heavy load. The hose clamp method positively prevents any slippage.
Also- did Procharger tell you to put that bolt in the end of the PS input shaft to retain the pulley? Stock setups don't use a bolt. As you can attest from your experience trying to get the pulley off, they won't fall off on their own!

Re: Removing power steering pulley (pics)
Did you have the pulley puller seated correctly? Because I can't see that breaking under even pressure while trying to pull it off? I'd just remove the entire bracket so you have even floor to work on; otherwise you may just damage it too much that you can't run it anymore. Hell I wouldn't even run it with a broken rib.
But I say remove it. I know removing a stock alternator bracket isn't tough to get the power steering pump removed, but I don't know about your set up with the s/c.

Re: Removing power steering pulley (pics)
it was seated correctly, and then all of a sudden it wasnt coming off, just started breaking that edge off.. and it isnt the actual rib that has a small (.5 in) broke off.. it is the very outer piece of the pulley. so im not to worried about it.
I didnt ask procharger how to remove it, i just asked them if they have this pos pulley and they said no...
and like i say, its aluminum, its soft. breaks apart very easy.... >: (

Re: Removing power steering pulley (pics)
The puller i've used in the past had 2 sleeves that completely encased that notch on the pulley. I borrowed it from either O'Reilly's or AutoZone.
Re: Removing power steering pulley (pics)
83 is probably right on this one, I would at least use a propane torch on it. Aluminum to steel by and large is NOT a pretty proposition when talking about things such as galling. If it's not a wierd offset or something consider a steel pulley they run about $10.

Re: Removing power steering pulley (pics)
I hear AutoZone in the states has inexpensive power steering pulleys. I'm from Canada but I hear these guys have them cheap. Hell I have an extra PS Pulley if you want, it has a piece of the rib broke too, but if you cant find one you can have this one for $5usd and you pay shipping.
BUT you'll most likely find one, and if you don't; that's effed.

Re: Removing power steering pulley (pics)
I have a KD puller that wraps the hub much more solidly. Snap on makes an even better one. But sorry bro, it looks like that pulley is toast. Even with heat and a good puller I dont know if youre gonna get it off. Looks like half the hub is gone. Sucks that Procharger doesnt back their products better. I just did have a Pontiac GTP in the other day. Didnt notice if the pulleys have more ribs but its worth checking.
