Re: *NEW (Crossover) PICS 5/14/11 POST 48* tc76 1991 z28 w/ A/C

well i made some MAJOR progress today

i built a bracket for the turbo to hang off of below the A/C compressor, bolted the turbo on, notched the frame (still need to box it in), and got some hot side parts cut.

Yes i know i cut the frame, it will be boxed back in and will not be an issue.

I'm very happy with where the turbo is, took the better part of 5 hours to get it how I wanted but it turned out great, down the road i may opt for a reverse direction compressor to make the cold side look cleaner.

PIX!!!!

to start, the 1A Auto magnetic tray i won from Dan @ 1A Auto if i remember correctly. If you don't have one of these trays get one, it's been super helpful with holding tools and preventing lost parts and bolts.

my eventual goal is twins, and i was looking at mounting a second turbo on the other side but the power steering pump and steering box are in the way. gonna have to go to a rack and pinion and different pump if you want one in a location like mine on the drivers side

I give you a lot of credit for fitting that thing in there with a full engine bay. I have a hard enough time trying to decide where I want mine, and I have no AC or anything!

thanks! it took a ton of thinking, measuring, test fitting, more measuring, test fitting, measuring, for like 5 hours good thing i went with a tc76 because its super compact.

I'm about to go finish the hotside, the merge is gonna be a PITA

Good luck! And IDK about you but I thought my T76 was pretty big in my engine bay......it's def not a "small" turbo lol. Mine barely fits in the pass side battery tray area which is where I'm leaning on putting it. Guess we'll see when the time comes.

well you have a T76 while i'm working with a TC76, i think yours is slightly more capable power wise but mine is optimized for a space saving. My tc76 is rated for 950hp or something like that, but 650-700rwhp is about the max anyone ever sees out of them.

Just finished the header to turbo pipes, downpipe and waste gate tomorrow! Pics soon!

That looks good! Make sure you wrap those pipes well...they will get hot and really bake the front of the enginebay.

good god thats a hell of a tight fit! thats gonna be pretty nice once its all done.
As Orr said make sure everything is well wrapped, turbo engine bays get extremely hot
Hows the downpipe gonna be routed? under the passenger header?

Re: *NEW PICS* turbo is ON!!! 5/17/11 POST 53* tc76 1991 z28 w/ A/C

everything is getting ceramic coated AND wrapped i think. i know your not supposed to wrap ceramic coat because it will void the warranty on the coating or something but i'd rather not cook my engine bay.

yeah it is VERY tight, but it's all pretty easy to work on - lots of time planning and measuring to thank for that.

Down Pipe is going under the pass header, thats today!

anyone know where i can buy a couple 3" v-band flanges in houston? forgot to order those....

Just got back from some night fishing with a freind myself lol. Beer would have been good too but oh well. Didn't catch a damn thing but it was still a good time. Got poured on towards the end of the night too lol. This rain in new england has been BAD this month!

Looking forward to seeing some new pics of the progress!

I caught a 17" speckled trout and a 15" sand trout on an artificial tonight, my first two fish on fake bait! i can get free live bait with a cast net so easily here i always do that, but i'm trying to learn how to use artificals so i dont have to deal with live bait anymore I found some 25.4 OZ cans of Fosters and bought them because they were hilariously large to drink out of. We need some rain down here bad, we are in extreme drought conditions

finished tacking the downpipe together, its super tight but man i feel like a pro when i step back and look at how well it all fits! gonna have to get a 2" hole saw for the waste gate plumbing tomorrow morning then weld up the DP, oil lines and i can fire this SOB up! no cold side though LOL i just want it off the lift my truck needs an oil change!

in regard to oil lines, i'm running a -4 for the feed, and a -10 for the drain.

few questions:

1. Is there a trick to putting -an lines together or is it just a PITA i'm gonna have to deal with?

2. for my drain, instead of going to the pan Im considering going to the block off plate where the mechanical fuel pump would go. Is that an ok place to plumb the drain to? its 2-3" lower than my turbo

3. What size is the feed port on the turbo? i assumed 1/8 NPT and it will start to thread then it gets REALLY tight. I didn't play with it much i was getting tired. turbo is a turbonetics tc76 and everything i can find says 1/8 NPT

pics soon they are uploading!

ok pics! i took 60+ pics but most of them suck due to my camera and the fact you can't really see the downpipe at all even when you are looking in the engine bay. still the wastegate to go man its gonna be crowded! Also my engine bay is horribly dirty from when i lost my brakes and had to offroad it in some gravel, then i parked it and started this little turbo mod and i never got cleaned! I'm repainting the whole bay after the turbo setup is done.

ok since there's not a lot of good photos ill throw some other random ones in too.

here's a shot of the shop i'm working in, SO much better than jackstands once my car is drivable again if any local guys want to come over and throw their car on the lift on the weekend just let me know

took what i had done off and welded it up, started with this:
Also my MASSIVE CRESCENT WRENCH!!!!!

welded up! my welder was doing some weird **** and pulsing so my welds aren't very pretty but im 99% sure it's all sealed up:

here's the shop getting hazy from all the welding/grinding:

Nice catches! Wish I had that luck last night. And fosters is awesome beer. One of my favorites actually.

3. What size is the feed port on the turbo? i assumed 1/8 NPT and it will start to thread then it gets REALLY tight. I didn't play with it much i was getting tired. turbo is a turbonetics tc76 and everything i can find says 1/8 NPT

pics soon they are uploading!
1. Always cut the actual braided line section first. Measure a few times, cut once. Then get the fittings on the ends of the hose BEFORE you attach either end to the car. The fittings all have swivel type ends so they can be screwed onto the engine without turning. I have tried to attach one end and then "make" the other end still.....no way!

2. I see no reason that you couldn't use the fuel pump block off plate area. I'm pretty sure I've actually seen it drained there before. Hell some people even use the valve covers!

3. As far as I know the drain port will always either be 1/8 NPT or -4AN. I can run down and check out my T76 and let you know what mine is if you'd like.

How are you planning on running the upper radiator hose?

either behind the alternator and around, or down and through the serpentine setup. it's kinda hard to see but there is a TON of room over there

I'm a bit concerned about the shallow angle your oil return is going to be. I'm running mine to the block off plate with a restrictor in the feed line (my restrictor is that I only get from 12 to 32 psi of oil pressure LOL). You will be closer to the block off than I am but a much shallower drop. What is the horizontal distance for the return line? In your case I am thinking the biggest return line you can possibly make will be your best bet. Something like a stock Saab turbo oil return for example. It is around 1/2" i.d. because it has a short drop if I recall correctly.

the line i just made is -10 so its 1/2" or slightly smaller ID, the vertical drop is 2-2.5", and the line including the big -10 fittings is aobut 10" long. I'm concerned about it as well, if it's a problem i'll drop the return down to the pan and it should* fix it

I'll have pics up much later, camera is dead

Re: *NEW Downpipe PICS* 5/19/11 tc76 1991 z28 w/ A/C

well with the big texas meet i took saturday off, and then yesterday off as well

i just finished hooking up the oil lines, bolted on the wastegate, Dp, turbo, EVERYTHING on. i'm heating the pan with a halogen spot light right now so i can change the oil, then i have to hook up the battery and tie back some of the harness so its not gonna get burned then its show time! still no cold side, thats this week. then I have to get everything coated, do fuel and figure out how to use code$59 to tune the SOB.

I'm just hoping for no exhaust or oil leaks so i can move onto the next set of the project.

Question: What the deal with running with no cold side? its it ok to let the turbo free wheel as long as i stay out of the throttle so i dont over spin it? I want to drive the car off the lift

if you want to look at my bin for a starter your welcome too. just pm me your email address.

If you have a good speed density tune already with 8D, you can run similar timing map and input the same VE table to a certain point, and then just play with the "injector" constant value til it runs and tune from there. Thats basically how I started my car, I used a factory VE table that I also compared to Digg's 60lb bin that I scaled down due to my 80lb injectors.

I dont know if those guys changed the code or not, but there is no injector constant, but a base fuel constant vs EGR %. Not sure why that is, but make all of them same value.

I enabled the closed throttle table to get my idle smoother. Once you get the car started and idling ok on its own, then you can tune. Thats just the tricky part and takes alittle while.

Yeah you can let the car run and drive without cold side hooked up, just dont get into the throttle and overspin the turbines. I've raced with the pipes blowing off the intercooler and had the throttle buried for a second or so after the blow out and no problems that i noticed.I'm not sure how fast the turbines will spin under WOT without pressure in the exhaust manifold. Boost at the intake creates more pressure in the exhaust as the engine is now making alot of power due to positive pressure at the valves. Without that, its a normal N/A motor with restrictive exhaust. Without alot of load on the exhaust side, I dont think you will overspin the turbines but then again I wouldnt chance it without some test data. I've just heard you dont want to run without the coldside. I was planning on n/a tuning my car before hooking up coldside and I was told not to.

Sweet build. I WILL have your same turbo sooner or later. My 62-1 is maxed. Keep up the good work.

I'll definitely take you up on that offer, I already have all of the moates stuff, the cable, and a good SD tune on the car for 24# injectors, but I've done zero to no tuning on anything injected LOL. It's gonna be a hell of a learning curve but I'm sure I'll figure it out with some help, start with an idle tune then start on 2lbs and go up from there.

Ok cool I'm glad i can move it around and not worry. I drove it off the lift last night! I'm leaking oil from what i think is the oil pressure sender, like its leaking internally and leaking out between the metal and plastic parts, i can turn them about 1/5 turn independent of each other.... I think it's broken.

Thanks! if I was to do it over i'd go tc78 with the 1.15 AR just so I'd have more room to grow. Oh well I need to get this dialed in before I get the mod bug AGAIN

Finished hotside pics uploading now

Re: *NEW Downpipe PICS* 5/19/11 tc76 1991 z28 w/ A/C

Hot side is DONE! once the cold side is together I'm sending the hot side off for coating, then I think I'm going to wrap it as well. Plugs on the drivers side are EASY to get to, and passenger side isn't any worse than headers if you go from the bottom. I ran the car for 15 min, just one small non-turbo related oil leak, oil is getting to the turbo, and no signs of the drain backing up yet, only time will tell!

When i first fired it, there was SO MUCH SMOKE from the manufacturing oil on the pipes i about has a heart attack, but all is well now

Yes the radiator hose has a funny kink by the water neck, it's getting fixed but thats later once the cold side and fuel is done.

No rattles that i could hear in the 200 feet i drove the car so I'm feeling pretty good about it all right now!

PICS!

i hope u really dont plan on running that air filter. i had the same one on my v6 car for all about 5 minutes, the turbo actually almost sucked the entire filter apart.

id be surprised if one of those filters could pass enough air for an n/a honda engine

for sure Lance, I'll let you know next time I'm up there at a reasonable time (aka not 3am)

no i'm not running THAT filter other than for protecting the turbo while moving the car around the shop (its a shitty spectre filter from vatozone). I'll be running one very similar to the ones LMR used on RC's car (1200+ rwhp) that looks like the one i have on there now. I contacted the manufacturer of the LMR car's filters and i *think* they have one that will fit. My back up plan is to get a 90 degree elbow and put the filter in the battery tray, which is most likely what will happen

I was gonna mention that about the filter..looks like the turbo would eat that up. Could just put a screen on it and run no filter...will be sucking hot engine air tho but an intercooler and meth will help that.

Could relocate battery to rear and run ducting under the car to about the front of that turbo for a colder air intake type setup. Or from under the air damn and up the back of the rad.

Re: *HOT-SIDE COMPLETE PICS* tc76 1991 z28 w/ A/C

hey guys sorry for disappearing again, summer classes started So i'm back in College Station so the Camaro will only get worked on during the weekends

But thats ok because the hard part is done! Since the hot side and oil lines are done, the rest is pretty straight forward:

1.) Buy intercooler, Al pipe, and come couplers, putting the cold side together will be EASY, its well documented how to do it and after what I already fab'd I'm not worried

2.) 3 bar map and the rest of the code $59 stuff

3.) Fuel. I'd like to start tuning with the stock pump/lines and get better at tuning before I go to twin in-tank walboros and bigger lines. I'm VERY strongly considering E85 since there is a station very close to my house

Re: *HOT-SIDE COMPLETE PICS* tc76 1991 z28 w/ A/C

I have an intercooler lined up, and I also have my welder sorted out to be able to tack the aluminum cold-side pipes together so once parts come in I can finish this build up i hope!

until then, I made a cardboard intercooler (super light weight!!!!) in the same dimensions as the one i'll be getting to I can get the car ready to accept the real deal. I'm also considering running the charge pipe through the air dam although I'm worried I'll rip it off considering how retarded low my car is

PICs!

Love the intercooler! Looks very efficient too, and environmentally freindly being made out of recycled materials.

On another note, a freind of mine ran the intercooler piping down and through slots he cut out of the airdam. His car is lowered and I cringe when he goes over speedbumps. If theres anyway possible to run it a different way, I'd do that, but if not, maybe try to go 2 1/2" under the car and bump it back to 3" into the intercooler. My buddies car has 3" and it's scary how close it gets to the ground while driving! Looking forward to progress.

And out of curiousity, did you go with a CX racing intercooler (ebay)? Thats most likely what I'm doing...I hear they are surprisingly efficient for the price.

Re: *cold side starting soon* tc76 1991 z28 w/ A/C

yeah its a cx racing, the 24x12x3 w/ 3" in/out $125 unit. I'm getting it used from zone89rs on here, he went a different way with a build after buying some turbo parts so I'm saving a few bucks buying used.

It says its rated for 600-800 HP, and even if its only good for 500 efficiently it'll work and save me some $$ for now. If its really a problem I'll get a better one down the road but thats a ways off and only a $450 upgrade later which is nothing considering the $$$ wrapped up in this build already. The common rumor is that guy's push these things WELL past 600 HP so I'm taking the risk to save a few bucks, I feel like it'll be ok
