STS Turbo 89 IROCZ TPI

Hey guys i want to get a remote mounted single turbo from sts for my camaro. it has a 350 TPI engine and i was wondering how much boost is safe to run on an engine with the stock ecu? also how much boost could a 350 handle with the stock rotating assembly?

Re: STS Turbo 89 IROCZ TPI

boost with stock ECU is probably about 2 PSI. 350 will handle as much as you can tune it. If you are asking about the stock ECU capabilites then you can probably get away with 0 PSI. If you spend some time learning about tuning it you could probably get up to 20+ PSI.

Stock ECU I was running 12lbs of boost. (383 Stroker w/ hyperutectic pistons) Was running a P600B Procharger and the 2 core intercooler with a custom eprom. Biggest problem with stock 350's is the ringlands. I'd say ou'd have problems with those before the bottom end gives out (at a resonable rpm)

With a stock engine with bigger injectors I wouldn't go no more than 8 PSI without an intercooler or 12 with a good intercooler. and pay someone to tune your ecu that knows how to tune well and on the safe side. You may have to change the MAP (manifold pressure sensor) if it cant read that high of boost pressure. Im not sure on camaros (yet. I'm new to thirdgens) if this is a problem for tuning.

You swapped in a stock 165 ECM like his 1989 into your 1992? Or are you talking about a different ECU than he has?

His 1989 doesn't have a MAP sensor.

A buddy of mine had an '88 IROC with a stock l98 and he was running 12psi (intercooled) from a d1sc procharger. He ran the stock injectors, ecm and chip. The only tuning he did was with a BTM and FMU. Never had any problems with it.

12PSI, chip, BTM, FMU would do it, but with a close to maxed out fuel pump. He must have had to keep his rpms in check. What RPM did he shift at?

He shifted at 5000rpm.
BTW I ment stock chip as in original 1988 GM tune. I'm not sure if he upgraded his fuel pump or not tho.

Re: STS Turbo 89 IROCZ TPI

Were you gonna get the LT1 STS Version and mount it to your L98? (shouldn't be a problem as far as I see it)

Keep us informed on this RMT!!!
I've been interested for years!!!

I'd love to see someone's results...

I had a buddy do the same thing on a Corvette L98 motor in his 88 formy. I believe it was still MAF but I cant recall. Ran 12 psi intercooled with procharger twin intercoolers. FMU and chip tune. It had full bolt on TPI with cleaned up 113 heads. Ran pretty good for what it was. Claimed he was pushing 12 psi on 93 oct. Had a chip tune but no idea who did it. It eventually blew up, not sure what happened. I think it was a mid lower 12 second car on street tires, trapped 111-112 i think. Not bad but expected more from 12 psi. Before the blower it was running mid 13's at 99-100 but not sure if he changed the cam when he added the blower or not.

Re: STS Turbo 89 IROCZ TPI

I plan on using the universal single kit because it would save me some money in the end... Also I plan on getting the miniram intake I'll probably only run like 5 psi for a while until I have enough money so build a 383 for boost... I'll keep you updated... Also does anyone know anything about the 700r4 ss trans from monstertrans? I'm thinking about getting one or a t56.

This guy used to have an off the shelf perf. chip but Procharger recomended returning it to stock. He was running low 13s but had no traction at all.

The 'vette L98 has higher compression and better flowing heads so the chylinder pressures would be higher even at the same boost levels. That might have caused your buddys engine to eventually go.

I was thinking about getting that kit a while ago. I ended up getting 1/4 of a home made rear mount setup. No idea when it will make it's way onto my car. Post pics of the build when you get to it if you don't mind.

Re: STS Turbo 89 IROCZ TPI

I guess this project never happened did it? I'm willing to do a twin turbo ebay kit and see what it can do, my motos got a 255lph fuel pump, and I'll re arrange the serpentine setup to make this work, and it'll kick ***
