Deciding on a single turbo application
So I've been thinking about what I would like to do to my car this summer and a friend of mine has been pushing the idea of turbo charging my Camaro for a while now. I have an 83 305 HO non CC with an in tank electric pump and a Mallory 4309 return style FPR. I plan on doing all of the modifications myself for a blow thru style carb. I am looking to push low boost, 5-7psi, non intercooled. I read on an older post someone recommending a 62-1 (I think) turbo for someone looking to push low boost on a similar application as mine. I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on the turbo itself and have no problem with purchasing an "Ebay turbo". That being said, what do you guys recommend?
Much appreciated,
Chris

Thanks for the fast response and for your input
Re: Deciding on a single turbo application
Either would be a good choice, as would a Master Power T70, an HX40, a Powerstroke 7.3L unit (if you're willing to accept the power you get from it and the lack of upgradability) and a few others. The reason I mention these is they would be easy/cheap to get.

Thanks. An HX40 or Powerstroke unit would probably be very easy to find. Out of those two, I would probably lean toward an HX40. It seems like a very 'well rounded' application for what I'm trying to achieve..as do the other mentioned choices. Thanks for the input guys!

Good luck and keep us posted when you start on it! If you haven't been there yet, Garrett's Turbo Tech section is a good website with lot's of info on sizing turbos. Make sure the rest of your car can handle the added power, (trans, etc) and your fuel pump can flow enough. A walbro 255 should be plenty of pump for your goals if that's not already what you have. Have fun.

Re: Deciding on a single turbo application
I have to look into my pump, although I'm fairly certain it flows enough to cover what I would like to do, I still need to double check. If I'm lucky with the pump that I have, that's another way that I can cut a cost. The transmission has a recent rebuild on it and can handle plenty of the power that I plan on throwing at it, which is another plus. Also, with the Hangar 18 blow thru instructions, I won't have to worry about spending "x" amount of money on an already prepped and ready carb. The way I've been looking at it is I can either spend the same amout of money, if not more, on a new motor or I could spend that and try something new for a change.

Re: Deciding on a single turbo application
Another question for you guys: I was doing some research on turbo headers last night, specifically BBS and those alike. I could fabricate my own set up pretty easy, but I was just wondering if or where you can purchase a fitting/flange to use where the manifold mates to the turbocharger itself? Assuming that I do fab my own, this was the only part that was kind of holding me back.
Happy weekend guys,
Chris
