map sensor for supercharging
I'm running the Crane Hi-6s ignition on my '87 350 tpi. Going to be supercharged soon and gathering parts. Looking for a boost retard unit and also at least a 2-bar Map. The one for the Crane system is $90. can i use 12223861 in place of crane hi-6s map? This is a 3 bar GM unit from 3.8 turbo cars. Thanks,Chris

I'm using a GM 2-bar map with a megasquirt.
You shouldn't retard spark under boost.

Re: map sensor for supercharging
The crane manual offers a TRC-2 module to retard timing with a 2-bar MAP for their ignition module. The TRC-2 retard module plugs into the ignition module as does the MAP. The timing retard is then called 'boost proportional' to prevent detonation..Sound right?

Re: map sensor for supercharging
Better off using a ECM with a 2-bar map to control fuel and timing under boost.

Re: map sensor for supercharging
I've put a LOT of time and tuning in my 165 with 6e and would still like to use the MAF. I'm assuming that I can still utilize my current tuning and add the timing retard and MAP sensor to the procharger system when I get it and still be well off? i'd rather not swap the ecm at this stage before adding more engine mods...

I should post on the prom board, but what needs altered in my tables to accomodate the blower if I were to not use the boost controller and MAP?

I think you're going to hit a wall where your fuel value is 255 way early on (both rpm and boost wise) and you then try to use the PE adder to add fuel, but it won't ever be right.
Sorry.

Yea..I was aware of the PE table corrections needed. Just wasn't in the frame of mind to change over to SD yet. She runs so good the way it is. Didn't want to mess with it if it wasn't broken..lol. I was in the process of doing the 3.5" MAF mod per another post I found and was going to change the MAF scalar to accomodate it..

There are most likely going to be future engine upgrades as well. I would rather buy once..

Re: map sensor for supercharging
I just hate getting into rewiring things for SD. Been reading this post and he says there are wire colors on his 165 ecm connectors that don't match the original pinouts,etc...https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tpi/...-maf-sd-i.html

The '165 ECM (specifically $6E) wasn't intended for the airflow you are planning. Either you need to switch to an ECM or code mask that is (like $12p which will work in your '165) or run a piggyback device. (injector multiplier, fmu, superfueler, etc)

Re: map sensor for supercharging
I was planning on superfueler or fmu.. Maybe just go the SD route to eliminate having to use an FMU and MaF? Sounds like things would be a bit simpler.

Re: map sensor for supercharging
i've never had luck with the fmu on my speed density, code59 and tuning with a 3 bar map, no timing retard.
