Thoughts on LB9 turbo build?

Just kind of wondering what those of you who have experience running boost think about a forged rotating assy. with splayed mains 310 running turbo(s). I rode in a buddy's FD RX7 that has the sequential turbo setup and I really like boost. I kept my LB9 block and cam (stock) in hopes of turning it into what I said above, not sure if I want biturbo or single turbo though. So, what are some of your thoughts on the build? obviously it won't be cheap considering most forged assy's are ~5000, so the build won't be happening for a while.

Re: Thoughts on LB9 turbo build?

Crank is 600-700, pistons 500-600, rods 300-400. Its no 5000$. Just need clean and machine block which can add several hundred more

If you do a forged crank might as well go 3.75" for a 335 build. Can also find used 383 stroker kit cranks which will be the same thing, 1 pc rear main internal balance for the 305 assuming its 87-92 block.

Dont know how much power your want but forged internals will survive more than the block can hold so if you dont beef the block up, its kinda wasted money

A stock crank kinda build with good rods and pistons would work well for moderate power levels.

A good t4 single 72-76 will do 500-700 hp fairly easily. Good bang for buck combo

I was just going to buy the whole rotating assy since I don't have access to a press, but that could change. My goal is 700whp. It's going to turn into a toy instead of a daily driver at that point, so I don'tmind running a different kind of fuel either. My goal is the ultimate thirdgen, do-all, end-all.

Splay mains and it should live. If you buy all the pieces will need assembly balanced out and then buy ring kit and bearings. Have it fitted to block and bore.

Yeah, I planned on having it blueprinted and having a shop gap the rings for me because they're done differently than N/a rings. I'm also unsure what ecm I should use for it, I've heard megasquirt is popular, but are there any intake manifold kits that have an ecm? Like the stealth ram kit for example.

Holley may sell the hp stuff with their single planes and stealth rams. Accel ha a single plane kit.

I would just piece something together. Run the engine setup you want and make the ecm work with it. Megasquirt i hear is hard to beat

Re: Thoughts on LB9 turbo build?

What are the characteristics of an intake manifold that works well with boost? I noticed you didn't mention dual planes, is that because singles work with boost better?

Re: Thoughts on LB9 turbo build?

Anything that has even flow distribution and relatively close on runner length for your desired rpm range makes for a good intake. Single planes have better distribution imo

Front fed tb intakes like miniram and hsr with equal plenum size from front to back do have some distribution issues. A tapered plenum fixes that issue often seen on sheetmetal custom intakes
