Intercooler options

What do you all recommend for a quality intercooler? Garret, Treadstone, Procharger? Ive read plenty of horror stories about the ebay brands and i think ill steer clear (cx racing, emusa ext) I know some say they're fine but id rather not chance it. I don't mind the cost as long as its good. Lookin to run 14 ish psi. Give or take a couple psi

thanks

Re: Intercooler options

Air to air? Garrett generally is said to have the best cores but they are most expensive. I have seen them knock 50+ deg out on higher boost level imports from our localshops vs the Larger but less efficient china cores

treadstone has worked ok as long as you dont push the hp rating. I think they are abit optimistic on their ratings. I had their 1300 hp core and Around 1200 ish flywheel or 1000 whp at 24 psi it was seeing well over 165 deg in an 8.9 sec run. 43 deg rise on the short dyno pull. In the 800-1000 flywheel hp it seemed ok.

so just overbuy whatever you get, you cant really have too much air to air cooler size

Yes. Air to air. I see Spearco as well, haven’t heard much about though. I even see the cross flow Procharger branded coolers kickin around used at times. Car is by no means a monster, but I want to utilize all I have

Yeah determine how you want to mount it and how big you can fit. You should be fine with the largest you can get. Treadstone may work good for you

Re: Intercooler options

My crappy Chinese delta fin pulled over 100 degrees f out of the charge, The problem was the flow restriction. I've been reading up a lot the past few months on how OEM's do things, and liquid intercoolers seem to be the best way to go. You get higher CFM ratings and superior heat transfer.

Yea. Tryin to strike that balance. I see some import shops buildin the garrets, installing tanks, usually 600 to 800 bux.

Only thing that concerned me was heat soaking in traffic. Like the a2w was superior for racing but a2a was a bit better on the street. Guess I have more reading to do

A OEM's have switched to liquid. Ford, GM, Subaru. Maybe it's packaging, but even all the high dollar supercharger kits are all liquid cooled.

Re: Intercooler options

Root and screw type factory blown cars makes sense to be liquid. Idk how well you could make that type of setup work with an air air deal

factory turbo cars it’s starting to make sense too since water cooling is so much better and can package it tighter. But those cars i believe have a heat exchanger to cool the water, as a heat soaked motor will eventually heat up the water. Depending on where things are mounted tho and how far away the turbo is and where the water tank is. Hot turbo close to the intercooler will dump heat into it constantly. Water tank in engine bay will heat soak. Water tank in trunk wont nearly as much.

i have had two water setups and dont use a heat exchanger. One setup with turbos somewhat farther away from the coolers And with the coolers exposed under bumper to moving ambient air, Tank in rear hatch, my water tank didnt heat soak much.

new setup with turbos in car heating the floor sheetmetal and dumping directly into the cooler with water tank right there, the whole thing gets hot quick, regardless of pump on or off

however even hot water will cool hot air lol. 100-130 deg water is hot but still Much cooler than 250-300 deg boosted air depending on your boost

even on the street tho most will not be wot for more than a few seconds at a time so no worries. Iat tables vs fuel enrichment should be increased anyway to compensate. At the track or feeling frisky stop and put in fresh water and ice

Re: Intercooler options

I know its an import deal, but thinkin about this one. I could fit pretty easily I think.

They have a 900hp option. But it be a tight squeeze. Spearco has one as well with I believe 3 inch ports
