Toluene Discussion

can anyone give any information on Toluene? (estimation on price, where to obtain toluene, proper mixing ratios, personal experiences) those would all be great, and really helpful.

Thanks a lot guys

you can get it at Home depot for pretty cheap. I forget what ratios you actually have to mix it in tho..I think I saw it in a tech article on the turbo buick board.

Do a google search on toluene and octane boost and you will come up with a lot of hits.

Toluene-R+M/2--114 w/92 gas
10%-94.2
20%-96.4
30%-98.6
Xylene--117 w/92 gas
10%-94.5
20%-97.0
30%-99.5
Methyl-Tertiary-Butyl-Ether (MTBE)--118 w/92 gas
10%-94.6
20%-97.2
30%99.8
MTBE is extremely dangerous to human skin, and humans in general if you come in direct contact with it. 1tsp. is enough to kill a man.

Can you buy just plain toulene or do you have to "find" it in some kind of solvent?

You should be able to buy it at a paint store. The Meijer here in Lafayette sells it in gallon cans. THe MTBE you won't be able to buy unless you have some super kick a$$ connections. That stuff is regulated much the same way freon is.

If I remember correctly toluene is very similar in benzene in the fact that it is a cancer causing compound. Just be carefull with it and use rubber gloves in a well ventilated area or leukimia could become a problem after years of handling.

We used to use Toluene at on the aircraft engines we build. It was band and discontinued because of its dangerous side effects and we use lots of dangerous products.

Toulene is added in the refinery process of oil to make gasoline. Toulene and Xylene do burn at a higher temperature than gasoline. Sherwin williams usually has it for a bout $6 and change(a little cheaper than home depot). Mixing Xylene with 100 octane race fuel would give you 104.2 octane(Sunoco used to have it). Taht'd be more than enough octane for most performance apps.

It is a corrosive as well as combustible solvent so you need to add a little oil to the mixture(I usually mix 1 capfull of marvel to 4 gallons of 94 with 1 gallon of Xylene). I t will eat through the rubber lines of the fuel system if proper lubrication isn't used.

Indy racecarsused to used 80% toulene but needed a fuel heater to get it to vaporise in order to combust. Mixing to much(30% max) would slow the burn rate dramatically and possible have ill efeects on the combustion process.
