want to get into the LOW 12s or 11s
want to get into the LOW 12s or 11s
Here's what I got:
An 86 IROC with a new engine (15,000 miles on it, 54,000 on car)
Stock tranny and rearend (gears are low...2.77s maybe). All I know is that acceleration is megafast, but the top speet is at around 100mph before the 8,000 redline.
Engine specs:
--I can't tell really by looking at the engine, and i didn't ask too many questions when i bought it (cam specs ect)
But i do know:
1. Holley Carb/Edelbrock intake (650 CFM or greater...sucks gas
a lot)
2. Hooker headers
3. No cat, 3" flowmaster exhaust
4. No smog pump
5. Aftermarket distributor/coil
I haven't raced this car or taken it to the track yet. Tell me what kind of numbers I would run.
Tell me what I can do to get to the 11-low12s. i don't really want to use NOS because of the danger, but Maybe I will have to since the cost of stroking the 5.7 will be REALLY expensive...and considering I would have to change the torque converter to handle the extra power.
Thanks

Oops sorry
Wrong post =p
It does not sound like you have those gears. That sounds like you have some high *** gears. I would cheack the ratio if I were you.

From what you have described, im guessing high 13's. We really need to know more about the engine to tell ya what your gonna run. Also, what RPM are you at when cruzing at 60 mph?
RPM's
I noticed it was high...hmm..I am remembering anywhere from 4500-4700 RPM's when cruising at 60, maybe a bit more. I have an 85 MPH gauge and when I have it pinned I am about at 7000 RPM"s...but then my tach redlines at 7000. The guy I bought the car from told me that was not true, and the car redlines at around 8000. I just think the tach is screwey. I just judge the redline by the sound of the engine.
I have to get my buddy to find out my other engine specs. It is a 350 bought from a speed shop. I forget the name. Once I find out i will post another topic.

If your running that type of rpm at 60, you either have EXTREMELY high gears (4.56 maybe) or your tranny is not goin into over drive. As for an 8k redline, I highly doubt it. Most engines can safely operate to about 6500 with out damage, but again, hard to say with out more specs.
next time I drive
Next time I drive I will check that stuff out. I think that I have 3.43 gears...its a stock rearend. maybe the tranny is busted. when I drive it I notice heat coming up from the console sometimes, and sometimes its cool. Is that normal? The only other car i have to campare it to is my mom's maxima that I drove in HS.

Your tranny is probably screwed, probably getting a lot of slippage, it's fairly common in our tranny's, 'specially if they've been abused. And 8000 rpm redline? Lets just say that I doubt your engine is built to go that high, and I think you'll have a lot more than a broken tranny if you keep that up.
