Re: Search hasn't worked for me for at least 2 weeks

There was a period time where the search was not working, in the form of returning that error message that you quoted. However, the search engine has been fixed. There are some bugs with the search, as it is not a stock vB search engine, but it has been up and running and members have been using it for a while now.

Please describe how you are using the search, including the words you are searching and any special advanced options you're using for the search. It's possible there is another bug that we're not aware of.

Re: Search hasn't worked for me for at least 2 weeks

The Search feature "appears" to be working for me - but there are bugs.

I was searching the classifieds ( exterior parts for sale ) and found that it was not returning posts that I expected to. The Advanced search seems to be just as bad.

Quick Example: Returned threads should default to "last post - decending order". That is not happening..... even when specified by the advanced options.

Quick Example: The "Show Post" standard search option is showing "Posts from the last day",......... but all the posts returned are from 2001 !

Last Example: I read an add for a pair of "Restored" IROC wheels. I Then searched for "restored" in that specific board and the add was not displayed. I searched with and without the Capitol "R" and I searched by post and by Title. ( restored term was written in both parts of the classifed. )

In that example the add was recent and had replies posted to it.
I didn't bother checking other advanced options since I could be here all day testing the software.....

Re: Search hasn't worked for me for at least 2 weeks

yea.

basiclly, it sucks to the point iits unusable.

simple example. lookup your username..

you would expect to see your posts, in decending order.. most recent ones first...

instead the dates jump around.. for me, i have a post from 2003 then a couple from 2004, then a 2002 then a few 2003s then a 2006......

i think its trying to return "relevent" results instead of date results.
its totally ignoring whats selected in the dropdowns for both type and date range.

Re: Search hasn't worked for me for at least 2 weeks

OK,

I click on the search option.

I type in "tpis runners and big mouth intake"

It already has a green dot in
"show threads"

I click "GO"

I recieve Vbulletin message
"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. "

---------------------------------------------------
Or I'll try this,

I click on the search option.

I type in " best 24# injectors"

It already has a green dot in
" show threads"

I click "GO"

I receive the Vbulletin message

"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. "

That is a bit drastic, and dramatic, of a conclusion. There has been no deny that there has been bugs with the new search engine. It's new and still under development. You may not have noticed that one of the plus sides is that you can search further back. This option was removed with the prior search engine, and created some negative feedback from the few who wanted to dig deeper. There still is limitations, but those are improving.

There has been bugs with the new search engine, no deny there. It will take some time to find and resolve them. We're not using the standard vB search engine that is known to have it's own issues and limitations.

I just did a search on your username and the first 2 pages worth of results were in complete order. When was the last time you searched by your username? Display order was a bug in the beginning, but I believe it was resolved.

If the results are not returning in order, please let me know how you did the search as perhaps there was something that didn't get patched. When I used the link to find all your past posts via your profile, the first 2 pages of results were in complete order.

A problem I see is that you're using "best" and "and" in your two examples. Those two words (and many more common words) are called "stop words". "Stop words" are so common words that they are usually found in the majority of posts. Example of other "stop words" are:

would would wouldn't yes yet you you'd you'll you're you've you
Those are such common words used in messages, that they are excluded from the search database to help minimize server load and search database size.

Re: Search hasn't worked for me for at least 2 weeks

Ok today I typed in:

"TPIS"

and got a Data base error

The Third Generation F-Body Message Boards database has encountered a problem.

------------------------------------------------------------
but I also tried

"build 350 tpi"

and it DID work & listed several threads.

i write software, so i know its a PITA with things like this....

im just telling you from my user only perspective.. its useless to me, because it WILL NOT limit itself by dates, and it WILL NOT order them correctly.

its not working for me, and for what i normally search for, its become useless.... im SURE its a very small bug. but its there, and i dont have the source to trace it thru myself... if i could, i would, because it really is limiting my search abilitys.

goto the search page.
click into the "Username" box
type MrDude_1 (try to type it so fast that the autocomplete doesnt come up.... i doubt it makes a diff, but thats how i do it.)
note that results are set By date in decending order.... (but dont click anything)

hit search or press enter.

note on the results the dates start with 9-29-2003, ect..ect... at the bottom, second from the bottom, theres a 2006 one.

what it SHOULD have, is threads i posted in yesterday.. like 7-24-2007.... and down from there.

if you flipped it so i had to goto the last page first(aka asending order) that would be fine too.. but note on that page.. its STILL screwed up on the dates.

so yes it finds posts with my name... no they are not sorted correctly.
