Is ANYONE working on the Search function ????
It's been awhile since this topic has come up and I'm curious to know if it's still being addressed or if the search will remain in its current state ?? Yes,..... The search function is working
but not very well
. Here is just one example of why the search is a PITA:
I'm viewing the Classified Engine/Drivetrain board. I see a classified for a guy looking for axles that's at the top of the page - first thread listed.
I search "This forum - show threads" for "axles" and the first reply shown is for a post from 06-03-2007 at 10:54pm. I go back the the classified board.
I search "This forum - show posts" for "axles" and the first reply shown is for a post from 07-29-2001 at 4:32am. I go back the the classified board.
I searched "All forums - show threads" for "axles" and the first thread shown for the Engine/drivetrain board is from 07-05-2007 at 8:06pm. I go back the the classified board.
I searched "ALL forums - show posts" for "axles" and the first thread shown for the Engine/drivetrain board is from 10-09-2001 at 2:25am. I go back the the classified board.
I searched "GOOGLE Thirdgen, org " for "axles" and the first thread shown for the Engine/drivetrain board is from 06-13-2007 at 4:28am.
This is
All the while I keep returning to the Engine/Drivetrain wanted board and can still see the first post with "axles" in the title and in the add ( The term axles was followed by puctuation inside the add. When I added the Exclamation point using the search this forum option - Posts or Threads - I got a "DATABASE ERROR". )
Since this site has a VAST weath of knowledge the search is still usefull
. If someone needs help installing a set of springs they WILL find a helpfull post. But the search is almost useless if you are looking for something specific, or time sensitive. I would think that resolving the Search bugs would be of the highest priority.

Re: Is ANYONE working on the Search function ????
cool.
think you could ride their *** until they actually FIX it though?
if you cant, thats cool.. but could you then put in a work request to move the billion stupid little mods to the board, put it back to "stock"... then it will be MUCH easier to find a good tech support person for future problems.
because lets be honest.. the search is useless for most of us right now, and without that... well it might as well be a new board.. not a board with years of knowledge in it.

Re: Is ANYONE working on the Search function ????
I'm not certain I understand, or perhaps you don't. The person responsible for the search engine doesn't exactly work on our forum software, or atleast has not at this time. *No offense meant to him*. So any changes you see, or have seen, is not because it has been made priority over the search. They are handled by different parties. I would probably be your tech support person for our forums and overall website, but the search issues can only be handled by the person who developed and customized the engine. We're not running a stock vB search engine.
i also realise the limitations of the stock vB search engine.
but im just saying that a working limited distance search engine is better then a non-working full search engine thats been customised to the point that only one person can fix it.
my suggestion was to move it back to a "stock" setup so that someone else, that has more free time could "expand" on it.
because honestly, it hasnt worked right all year. thats eight months of nothing.
Re: Is ANYONE working on the Search function ????
Hasn't worked right all year? 8 months of nothing? This is news to me. I used the search multiple times per day leading up to the past 2 months or so, and it worked perfectly fine (sort order and all).

I searched TGO for a good 2 hours at work today and it worked great.
Re: Is ANYONE working on the Search function ????
There are some known bugs with the software, so I don't deny the comments about them. But I do disagree that the search has been "nothing" for 8 months, and that it has been broken for the year. That's not correct as up until the new search engine (which partly came because a problem encountered with the existing database), I had used it multiple times per day without any glitch, as has numerous other members. There weren't any notable scale reports from members with the prior search engine, which was prior to roughly June. I think MrDude_1 is slightly off with his time line.

This is a direct quote for a thread.
You get nothing for a response.
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.
Try just AFR
You get the same thing

I'm working with the proper person in regard to the search engine issues. So yes, it is not fixed, and we're aware of it.

May want to also contact them and let them know about:
"Find all threads started by so and so" and tell them that doesnt work worth a damn also. That is also very aggrivating...

Re: Is ANYONE working on the Search function ????
heres all i want.
go type in my username in the "user name" field.
click search.
WAIT!!!!!! dont go "i see results"
actually LOOK at them
2003? What the ***?
and its not that they're in reverse order. the last page has results from..... 2003!!!
they're in some random fugging order.
i SHOULD be able to see everything i posted in, in the order that the threads were last posted in.
i cant see any of the threads ive posted in, to follow up on anything.
and this is NOT the only search bug.. sure search works if you dont care about the results... but actually looking for something specific.. yea it sucks.
it flat out sucks.
i wouldnt harp on it, but you seem to be in denial of it for some reason????

If your looking for something specific ( Berlinetta ) or recent than the search is not helpfull If your looking for something generic ( replace front spring ) than you will get helpfull results.
The search function is in a sorry state but still does serve a purpose in it's current form. Newbies still find it helpfull - but us Vets are growing impatient with it.

In regard to the issues that have been listed with the search engine, I've been given an ET of fix, so it is being addressed and resolved.
By the way, MrDude_1, why are many of your messages formatted with so much spacing between paragraphs?

Re: Is ANYONE working on the Search function ????
MrDude_1, please take the time to read and understand what has been posted. I have not been in denial in regard to the search engine issues, other than a few examples that I wasn't aware of, and required some examples. I've been upfront and open about the issues and stated many times that it is being looked into and resolved. The order issue in particular has been WELL understood and acknowledged.
For review:
MrDude_1, you stated that the search has been "nothing" for the past 8 months, which is a bit over exaggerated. The search had been working normally up until 2 months or so ago. If my memory is correct, I have not read or seen any search issues up until that point.

it hasnt worked FOR ME, with WHAT I SEARCH FOR for longer then the entire year.
i just didnt want to bitch and harp about it at the time.... although you'll notice my posts went to about zero in late december because of it.. and really, i havent posted in here much this whole year.
so no, my timeline isnt off.. your awareness of the problem may be though.
in anycase, it doesnt matter much anyway. i mostly just answer questions, not ask them.
Re: Is ANYONE working on the Search function ????
Why? Personally, the only thing that helps me is clear facts and examples, formatted in an easy to understand format, to the point, made with effort. After all, if you want the message to be read you have to make the message readable. To be totally honest it can appear as if the writer of the message is not making an effort for it to be presentable, and therefore, be taken seriously. Just my personal opinion. I know that the unnecessary paragraph spacing aren't doing anything positive, in my personal opinion.
Considering the fact that I personally use the search feature multiple times per day as a requirement for what I do here, coupled with no other reports in the past several months (up until lately) about the search engine - and I receive and respond to webmaster emails from members, as well as PMs - I'm not certain. Perhaps you was misusing the search, and therefore, not finding the results you desired? I do know that the sort issue in particular has *not* been an issue in the entire past 8 months that you mention, it's a recent one.
As I mentioned, we are not denying the issues with the search. I appreciate the examples and every one of them was looked into and verified. I personally did this. So it is appreciated.
I would like to lock this thread, as not only have the examples and issues with the search engine been taken into consideration, but it is being worked on. I would like to lock this thread because I don't see the thread staying productive and/or positive.
I've been given an ET of this weekend to get the issues resolved with the search. Please give or take some time around that, as things don't always go as planned or expected.
If the issue remains at that point, a new thread about the issue, with examples being appreciated, will be perfectly fine and actually wanted.
Thanks to all for your input and examples. It is being used to address and resolve the search issues.
