Any way to get rid of the ads?

The forums are a wealth of knowledge, but the ads are horribly annoying and slow. Is there any way to have access to the forums without the ads?

Re: Any way to get rid of the ads?

I would suppose the only answer here is possibly a paid membership to view the forums without ads. Are you willing to pay for membership to not view ads? Ads aren't going to just disappear because we don't like them. The ads are there to support the cost of the website (bandwidth, software license, hardware) and of course profit as the parent company that owns ThirdGen.org is a for profit business.

Right, I understand. That's what I was looking for, some sort of paid option to get rid of them. I'll check around for that option.

Hrmmm, can't find the paid member option. You would think, being a "for profit" organization, this option would be easily accessable. (Or I am just blind.)

I didn't say there currently was such an option. We currently don't have that option, and can't say that we will. It was a question I posed to you. We have not had many request the ability to pay for a membership to view the website without ads. Due to the economy and people being more conservative with spending, it appears people generally are dealing with the inconvenience over spending money.

I can't say it's an option on the table, at this time, but if there were any that might remove the ads, that would probably be the only avenue due to the reasons I previously stated.

Re: Any way to get rid of the ads?

I use Firefox plus an ad block plug-in. It's all free. Ads on most websites simply drop out and you don't even know they were there.

If you don't have firefox get it here:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html

Then get the plug-in for "Adblock Plus":
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

While you're at it, add the plug-in for NoScript which hardens firefox even more (it's already good) against security threats:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

For sites that you want to support by viewing their ads (like TGO), you can disable Adblock Plus on a site-by-site basis.

Cheers.

Yup. Each website, just like most people's homes, have rules and guidelines that vary from each other which comes when they're operated from different people in charge. Because ThirdGen has not been privately owned since 2006, but is a for-profit business, there is a need to not only generate revenue to pay for server hardware, bandwidth, software license, paid staff (ThirdGen.org does not have paid staff), but also to bring in some profit to the business.

But I don't really see how that has anything to do with us. Each website, privately or business owned, will operate different. I don't see this changing. I doubt the majority like ads, however, there has to be some sort of revenue involved (ads and/or paid membership) to pay for expenses and to bring in some profit for the owners involved. I should also clarify I'm not exactly speaking of our "in-house" ads - such as Hawks, 1A Auto, etc. They directly support ThirdGen.org and the vehicles we are dedicated toward. They also help people find parts for their vehicle from sources they may not have heard or known about.

I don't exactly like it myself, but I understand both sides as this site is not free to operate. But I find a way to not only deal with it, but to contribute to the community as a staff member.

Thanks.
