As some of you may know I blew my factory sealed 350 a while ago, so I decided to finish another block, a new 350 with everything forged and built for turbo application. Since is going to be a slow build I decided to get another factory block and just put it there until the new one is finished.
Yesterday, I got a decent deal for a running TBI 305 from a 1996 GMC truck.
The plan is to simply replace bearings, rings & gaskets, add a high volume oil pump. Replace the valves and springs for a slightly used set that I have laying around at the shop. Replace the 305's cam for a 350 cam and also use a set of 1.6 stamped rockers that are also laying around. Heads will be slightly ported and port-matched, new valve seals and voila!
The plan is to run it at 9-10 pounds of boost and maybe get around 380 to 400 hp out of it until I finish the other block. I guess that is a good estimate number since I was getting around 420hp @9-10 psi from the 350, and the 350 was 100% untouched.
So, any suggestions for the 5.0L?
My plan is to get the car running again with the 305 until the 350 is done and then get the 350 in, most probabbly in January/February 2016.

I want to say the heads on the 305 TBI motors are terrible. I'd atleast put some stock L98 heads on it.
That's what I've been reading. I hope the light porting and the 1.6 rockers at least give the poor flowing 305 heads a boost.
This is a temporary engine so I am not concerned if it does not make huge power, I'll be happy to make it until the end of this season.
I'll keep you guys posted on the power this five-O makes.
Nice Ed, gonna subscribe to this one. Any updates since?
Been a slow progress, too many things, very little time.
Engine was power washed, througly cleaned and re-assembled with new rings and bearings. Cleaned the 350 heads and installed them with some 1.6 stamped rockers and pushrods I had. Today I am installing the intake and maybe... Installing the engine to the car. I might say that dyno is up next week and see how much this 5.0 can safely make.
Engine before disassembly and cleaning. Had to use a cutting wheel to cut the flexplate bolts.
These are the 350 heads from the engine that died, not bad after some wire brush cleaning!!! That is the actual head that had aluminum of the melted piston.
100% cleaned engine with new bearings and rings. Light honing was also done. Flex plate is there for rotating purposes only.
Engine is complete and ready for installation and some minor tunning at the dyno. More pics later and dyno session vid to see how much HP this low budget 5.0 build can handle for auto cross racing with turbo.
Till' next time!👍
Out of curiousotiy, are you planning on laeving it with the TBI? I have recently been thinking about turbo charging my 305 TBI. From what I have read, some say that to turbo the TBI you need external controllers and extras to control fuel and timing. I cannot find a definite answer anywhere everyone says somthing different! What did you have in mind as far as how to tune it after the modifactions? Thanks.

Hi,
I am using a Holley Commander 950 ECU with Stealth Ram.
In fact here are more updates!!!
Last weekend I installed the 305 with new bearings, rings, high volume pump, 350 TPI stock cam, 350 heads and 1.6 stamped rockers, here are some pics.
"New" 305 engine in place, no to install all the sorroundings... Sometimes I just want to carb this thing and forget about all the complexity of turbo parts.
Yesterday's progress:
Installed the passengers hot side, starter, fuel system with new filters and injectors O rings, water pump, alternator, ps pump, and turbocharger.
Can't wait to see how this works out. Any idea of what the actual cam specs are, or just what was stock in the 350? I think you'll probably fall short of 380-400 mark unless you cam it. I think a 268H would be awesome for this setup, maybe a bit narrower LSA but it'd put you in the ball park of where you're going to hit with your intake and heads.

It's just a 350 stock cam, but the "best" that came in the TPI which I think it was 88. It also has 1.6 stamped roller rockers. I believe it can hit the 400rwhp mark, it's a 305 but is a refreshed one, the 350 had about 180,000miles on it and very low compression due to wored out rings and still managed to plant 470rwhp.
Either way, If I can reach the 400-450 mark I dont think I'll push this mill beyond that. This is a spare engine just to have time to replenish my wallet and have timme to build the new block I have.
Let's see how the 5.0 does, I expect a dyno session next week.
Is she up and running yet Ed? Just recently woke mine from its' coma lol...
Also, what did you ever do with those quad turbo headers, do you still have the prototypes?
No, not yet 😐
Havent got the time to work with it, probabbly do some more today after I return from the office.
Sadly the quads were traded for a marine engine I needed for a boat I had, now I have no quads and sold the boat 😞
I'm sure we'll see another set of quads from you sometime down the road, that one setup you did with them came out incredible. Looking forward to more progress with this build...
Heh, I just installed a BOV myself after running so long without one in the very same spot as you. Which one did you go with? Are those running videos up ready to go Ed...?
is this the car that burnt a piston on the dyno and then got replaced with a crate motor and burnt the piston again? if not, sorry just read it late one night and could never find the thread again.
I had a similar issue once, ended up being a random wiring harness issue that only popped up time to time under a good launch. turned out the wiring to the injector had issue, changed out the harness and was fixed... 2 motors later.

I finished the engine and got it to the dyno about a week ago. The engine is great!!! 312hp and 344ft/lbs @ 5psi of boost and 424hp and 456ft/lbs @12psi of boost and both horsepower levels where obtained at sub 10.5 fuel ratios, which means that it can easily hit the 500hp mark.
This past weekend I attended a Solo1 race at the Caribbean Racing Series event at the Ponce El Tuque road racing track, what a blast.
It was my first event at that track so I attended Saturday's practice day also, just to get a feel at this new track that has a reputation of claiming racing cars due to mistakes. Well, let's just say my GTA almost pay the price...
Hopefully it is not hurt too bad. Looks like a Blitz wing on it?
It looks pretty bad but that's because the pics were taken while removing the nose clip in order to pull back the car. There was absolutely no damage to the car, not even bent fins in the radiator nor the intercooler.
The wing is custom made by the T&M shop.

Looks like you made enough power to get in trouble! Glad it was just a minor fender bender, and nice work on the dyno #s.
That crash was caused by missing my braking spot just by a fraction of a second, classic stupid mistake.
The next day a road racing Celica was totalled in that same corner, guy is still in the hospital but getting well.👌
That track is very unforgiving, it has a reputation for that.
Here are some more shots of the PS1G(Solo1) competition back in Sept. 18.
The car now has 295/40/18 on all four corners with Z06 wheels 18x9.5 and 18x10.5 using 2.5" spacer in the front and 2" spacers for the rear. I also had to add a 1/4" thick piece of metal stock to the steering stop tab located in the A-arms.
car handles like is on rails and no apparent turn radius effect, got all the hairpins perfectly!👌
I would like some info on those great hood louvers, did you fab them or buy them ?, if you fab them, can you share the link to build thread ?.
Thanks George

Hello George,
Unfortunately I did not make any thread, it was a relatively easy thing to make. In my work I have direct access to laser and waterjet cutting machines so everything from the hood louvers, wing, etc, are made at my shop.
If you are interested in a pair of stainless steel louvers like mine (minus the tow hook and tow hook slot privision) I could make you one for $95 dollars, shipping included to the US.

A pair of these would be great for my Iroc turbo build for dissipating heat and I thank you for the offer, but I have to pass on it right now as I need the funds to complete this build first.
I'll take a "rain cheque " lol
