Working on a 92 formula with N10 the other day and was looking for a bit nicer/NOS heat shield. Found a nicer one (89ish) in my stash but noticed a few differences in the 2 parts.
The 92 is heavier, thicker .037 vs .019 earlier, has a rubber stopper and is better stamping by not having near as many wrinkles in it.
My parts book only goes to 89 but was wondering when the switch was made.
Parts book show a change?
Anyone have good pictures of early an late parts from 89 to 92 ?

 

I know there was a change, but I was thinking it was from a one-two piece shield. Like instead of the single cat shield with a separate shield from the back of the cats into the tunnel, the shield was all one piece. But I might be all wet on that impression.

I know my 91 Formula has a rubber bumper, and it's a fairly early 91 production car (May 1990).

Download the Firebird P&I catalog PDFs, they cover 82-92 or 91 anyway. Might also look at some of the dealership websites that have the exploded diagrams from the GM database, they usually have the latest diagrams in the system, but part numbers can be missing completely.

Edit: Other places to look for part numbers and photos would be older books and magazine articles that talk about the ZZ4 Camaro kit. Since the kit included the dual cat setup, and it came about after the end of production, the heat shield in those pictures should be the latest version. Also take a look at the NOS dual cat heat shield on Ebay.

 

Sooooo maybe the early thinner one is "rare" lol
I've seen the one on fleebay but didn't have a real close look.
Going to revisit that in a bit but it's kinda hard to swallow paying almost 300 bucks for a originally listed 50dollar part..

 

These are the 10164153 shield listed for 89-92 in the parts and illustrations catalog and the ZZ4 conversion instructions. The P&I 92 exhaust page is a little suspect, because it still shows the "saddle" clamp to the I pipe instead of the band clamp used at the end, so it's not the latest diagram.

Edit: Here's the best shot I have of the heat shield under my Formula. Note the rubber bumper. Don't judge my patina, mess, or death defying faith in my HF jack.

You and me both brother, but it'd cost more than I paid for my entire project car. The things would be cheap and plentiful if people bothered to salvage them, but I've never even heard of anyone pulling the heatshield when parting a car. Except me, I'm forever pulling things like gas tanks, heat shields, etc and picking up the HO exhaust spacers laying on the ground...

Used heatshield should clean up with WD40 and 000 steel wool, I'd think. If it's still ratty, a squirt of mexi-chrome, aluminum engine paint, spray galvanizing compound, or weld-thru would probably get the approximate look right.

 

I wonder if there may be a tsb about it buzzing the floor pan requiring the part to be updated ? Or it just got changed

 

Lighter weight, too. 1989s were the best.

Hey Tony, what's your time frame? I'm parting a T-boned '92 Z28, factory dual cat car that I'm pretty sure still has it's original shield. However the car is still on the trailer, I'm unsure of the shield's condition, and there are a couple projects in front of it.

If you're in a hurry, when the rain stops I can go take a look at it and see what kind of shape it's in and we can go from there. If it's in good shape, looks like I should charge like $500 for it LOLZ

I sent him an offer on that shield a year or so ago but he's holding out for all the money.

 

Yeah, he's got some cool NOS stuff, but it's crazy expensive and I never see anything getting sold.

 

My original is in great shape, just need to re-plate it.

 

LOL @ the exhaust hanger. I picked up a new one at the dealer for my Formula back in 2000. The exhaust was clunking against my Alstons and I figured a new hanger might help. I finally got around to changing the hanger around 2008. Maybe I should have saved it for some of those sweet sweet Ebay profits.

Maybe I should list all my NOS parts for ridiculous prices like the ones on Ebay. Probably have a few grand worth, at Ebay prices. But I'm not really into collecting parts to make money. I collect parts build my cars.

Sorta related... Anybody compared a T5 dual cat hanger to an Auto dual cat hanger? I know they're supposed to be different, but don't actually have a T5 dual cat hanger around. Do have a T5 hanger, and an auto N10 hanger, thinking I can probably splice them together to hang the dual cats from the T56.

 

The bracket that bolts to the trans is different. I want to say the bottom 2 torque arm bolts are further apart on the automatic cars, but could be the other way around. Either way, the trans bracket is the only difference, the rubber and the cat bracket should be identical.

 

Side story...

The guy above selling the $225 hanger had a set of L69 HO exhaust manifolds for sale years ago. I was looking for a set for my Crossfire. He had them on ebay for something crazy, like $350 or something. Surprise, surprise, no takers. A few weeks later he relisted them with no reserve. Guess who got them for nine bucks? Yup, this guy!

Sometimes these guys with the insane prices just want to dump something, so always keep an eye on them.
