Hey Guys,I thought I would finally post some pics and tell the story about my ride.
This car started out as a Sport Coupe 305 Tbi/Auto no options really except for t-tops and A/C.A local guy who owned a auto repair shop bought this car in 95',he put a ZZ4 crate motor,a 95' Camaro T56,and 4.56 gears in it.I remember the car and see it ride around a couple of times, but he could not get the clutch to work right(I believe he was using the wrong flywheel).
Around 99' he sold the motor and the car sat in his garage until he sold it in 2012 to a guy I later became friends with.Later in 2012 I bought the auto repair shop from him.In 2013 I met the new owner and he told me that a guy was building and installing a motor in the car,I told him then that he should just save his time and money and sell me the car.In march of 2014 my buddy said that the guy had installed the motor and that he wanted me to finish up the wiring, make a y-pipe for the exhaust, and fix the clutch.
I fixed the wiring, made a y-pipe,the clutch fork was broken and it had the wrong flywheel, replaced the front brake hoses and pads, and charged the a/c.
My buddy got the car and drove it for two weeks, then the motor developed a knock(a main bearing had spun). My buddy being very discouraged parked it.In October of 14' he sold it to me,I put it in my shop and there it sat.
Back in 09' I bought an Lt1 out of a wrecked 95'formula as a spare for my 94' formula,I could not hear it run so I bought it on the guy's word.I also bought a spare Pcm and harness back then as well.In Feb of 16' I started getting the parts together for swapping in the Lt1,I made a test stand and made a stand alone harness for testing the motor.I ran it several times on the test stand and now the motor was ready for the swap.
I finally got the Lt1 swap done in Feb 17' and I have been enjoying since.I put Iroc rims on it,I installed power windows and locks, keyless entry, tilt column, delay wipers, tinted the windows, and painted the spoiler and hood.It is still a work in progress.
Thanks guys,I was on the fence about the aero wing for a while but I think I will keep it.Years ago I did not like red interior but I really like red now.
I have a couple of underhood pics,I need to tidy things up but I have just been to lazy.I made a bracket to mount the A/C up top and the Alt down low so I would not have to notch the K-member and make custom lines for the A/C.I bought a set of used headers from a guy that said they fit his 3rd gen,but I think they are made for 2nd gen, they actual fit good except the collectors/merge.I made a wedge shaped cut on the collector and bent them in toward the trans and welded them back.I made a y-pipe and a trans crossmember to clear the pipes.I put a used corvette Lt4 starter on it,it sounds like an older style chrysler starter.
Boy, do I have a bunch of questions for you. 1) the air intake - where did you get that set up? 2) Is your fuel pump in the tank? 3) Wiring, which ECM did you use? Who tuned it? Was it difficult to marry the wiring from the LT1 to the 88 wiring? 3) Did you have to modify the tunnel for the shifter ? 4) Did the 88 have EFI originally? Did you utilize the EVAP system? I'll stop here for now. Thanks.
-The air intake is from a TPI car,I bought from a member here.
-The fuel pump is in the tank,I had to install in because the car was converted the a carb before I bought it.
-The wiring harness is from a 95 f-body and the ecm is from a 94-95 f-body,I bought tunercats software and a moates cable back about 10 years ago from my then 94 formula.I have only done a few changes in the tune such as different gears, fan on/off temp, and vats.I do have a power tune for headers and cold air intake from Solomon.
-The tunnel was cut for the shifter by the previous owner.
-It was Tbi from the factory but was converted the a carb back in 96' by the previous owner.
-I have the Evap unhooked and turned off in the tune.
I had the Lt1 wired stand alone at first because I had it on a run stand to test the motor before I put it in the car,it was not bad integrating the harness.I used information and diagrams from Pocket and Shbox's 4th gen site.
Thank you for the information. I've been doing "the swap" for the past 5 years! We're just getting back into it and I hope we can remember how to put everything back together. Your pictures of your engine compartment will be very useful.
It pulls pretty hard at first but dies out pretty quick with the 4.56 gears,I like the gears but it would be all around better with 4.10's.
I like the LT1 and I am glad I swapped it in. I have a hot cam and 1.6 roller rockers for it but I have not had the chance to install them yet.I know there are better cam choices but I am not concerned about top speed or racing.
