Delay wipers or intermittent wipers?

Kind of a noob question.... My 86 Z28's wiper stalk says DELAY on the switch. I need a new wiper switch in the column, there are two different PNs. one is for intermittent and the other for pulse. Which wiper system do I have?

I believe PULSE = INTERMITTENT = DELAY.

Someone once told me that it has something to do with where the washer pump was located; the wiper motor or the bottom of the washer reservoir.

That is the year range for the Wiper Assembly; Pump in Wiper Assembly = 84-87,... Pump in the Washer fluid tank = 88-92.

Sorry about reviving an older thread...

But I have a similar question. My ‘85 T/A has the wrong wiper switch installed: it has a cruise control switch built in the wiper stalk, and I believe the car never had cruise. The stalk also has delay wipers.

How would I identify whether my car was intended to have delay wipers / not? Is the delay part of the switch function? Currently my wipers do not turn off unless I cycle the key switch off/on.

thanks,

The switch is in the column, and must match the wiper motor setup. If you put the wrong switch in the delay/pulse won't work properly. It sounds like maybe someone swapped your column and not of the correct year for your car. You can change the switch, but you have to take part of the column apart, you can change the whole column, or you can change the wiper motor, but you need to know what the switch is supposed to be. AFAIK the mid years had the infinitely variable, no detents for the delay. Later cars had the type with the detents.

The controls for the cruise in in the cruise unit, the stalks are, essentially, universal for the car. I put a cruise stalk in my non cruise car because I plan on adding it later. The stalk has nothing to do with the wiper function

thank you for the reply.

i found my issue to be the (blue) armature on the wiper module was not contacting the switch:

I assume this means the module never saw the wiper rotate, which is what caused the motor to run endlessly.

i reseated the module and now the wipers are operating as expected.

I’ll still need to replace the switch as it rotates too far, but at least now I know it’s meant to be a delay wiper setup.

What module are you talking about? I ask because my wipers aren't working. The washer pump is working though...

Your car has an 82-83 very specific wiper system that is very different from the 85-87 or 88-92 set-up. 82-83 Wipers are NOT compatible, interchangeable, or wired like anything from 84-92.

Re: Delay wipers or intermittent wipers?

I have a similar issue, mine being the 85 trans am. The wipers only work on fast now but don't even sweep, the washer pump has also stopped working, and none of the settings on the wiper stalk for the wipers work only the fast setting, plus the crank doesn't move with the motor spindle.
I can't add the short video of the motor and crank arm as it is mp4 not mp3
