stupid question about intermittent wipers
I have a tilt steering column over here I want to put in. hte replacement already has a intermittent wiper switch on it, mine does not.
If I leave the switch on here, will the wipers work normally, obviously without the intermittent part?
Or... if I wanted to go ahead and make my wipers function like that, what else would I have to upgrade?

No, a non-intermittent wiper motor will not work normally with an intermittent wiper switch.
IIRC the F-body wiper system is very similar to other GM wiper systems of the era, so you will need the intermittent wiper motor.

ok, I think I know a car I can pull one off of, otherwise I'll switch out the switch and keep what I already have

Re: stupid question about intermittent wipers
When a standard 84-87 HIGH/LOW motor was connected to my 85 Z28 (W/delay) I was still able to wipe the windshield.
LOW = LOW
High = High
Delay = Wipers stop where-ever they are in the cycle.
There is no change in the wiring from the dash connector to the wiper motor, meaning the dash plug doesn't care what type of wiper switch plug it's connected to, as long as it fits - your good.
The wiring that controls the DELAY function is in the column,... once you install a "Delay" column you can simply install a year matching "Delay" wiper motor you should have a fully functional "Delay" wiper system. ( assuming that all parts are good ! )
* It's important to swap a 'year matching'/compatible steering column !!!

Re: stupid question about intermittent wipers
so a 1991 motor wouldn't work with a 1989 column? the reason I ask is because I know of where a 1991 motor is I can get for next to nothing

Re: stupid question about intermittent wipers
The column being year matching/compatible is what I meant.
Your car is an 89 so a 91 column will not have compatible plugs to your 89dash harness. ( could still be modified to work )
Wiper motors are grouped into years.....
82-83
84-87
88-92
So Yes;....... a 91 delay wiper mount should be a direct plug in for your 89 engine harness. If possible be sure to test it in advance. There's no way to distinguish a delay wiper from a non-delay wiper by looking at it. ( Well; I haven't found a way yet ! )
Edit: Since you already have the replacement tilt/delay coulm,..... just position it under the dash and connect the wiper conntion to the dash harness plug, then turn the original ignition ON & operate the wipers. This will show you exactly how the wipers will operate once the column is fully installed so you know what to expect.

Re: stupid question about intermittent wipers
thanks. If I can find a part number on my wiper motor, and it's different than the one I'm looking at buying, maybe that's an indication that it's the intermittent one.

Re: stupid question about intermittent wipers
Just curious but wouldn't the intermittent part of the wiper system be in the cover only and not the whole wiper motor.
Mark,if the Chevy's have the same motors as the Pontiac's hears the motor P/N. 22072788.

Re: stupid question about intermittent wipers
Thanks manta! and you bring up a good point about just changing out part of it. A few years ago I had a logic board go out on a sunfire, and I just changed out the board, not the entire motor. It was a lot easier that way

Yup, I should have called it a "wiper motor assembly".
