Time to plan Spring/Summer Gathering ?

Isn't it about time we start throwing out some ideas/plans for the third gen Spring/Summer Gathering?

Just to get the ball rolling, I still like the idea of having it at one of the local strips. My initial thought are the new strip at Houston Motorsports park. Just in case you have have not heard, they have a new first class 1/8 mile all concrete strip, plenty of room, and plenty of shade trees in the non racing area to hide from the sometimes brutal Houston weather, and good cooperative owner and staff. When I talked to him about the last gathering, he was very willing--just could not get the details worked out since the strip was not actually complete at the time.

Let's hear yur thoughts and get some discussion going!

I'm down for doing it at the new strip, my car will defenetly be running by then. I am not missing out this time. So count me in for doing it at the strip or anywhere else.

I'm think the track idea would be cool too. Has anyone thought about any dates for this thing? I'd hate for it to be too hot, but I don't think I'll have the LT1 and 6-speed swapped before late June....

Sounds good Zap. Sonar and I went there a few weeks ago, pretty nice track (only gripe is the shutdown area and the hairpin turn). We'd be doing good to have it on a Saturday (unless it can be "reserved"?), test n' tune was pretty relaxed when we went (there were actually cars there slower than me ). WE could have got in as many runs as we wanted too (I think sonar made like 12?). Either way, it'll be fun!

Yah that sounds excellent. Lets do it sooner than JUne though. How about next month. I guess IM just anxious since my car is running good now and the tranny was cratered at the last gathering. I think the strip idea is perfect because if you want you can just relaxe and watch and look at cars, or make a few runs, or more if you want. These cars are fun to look at, but some of us have modded the cars with racing in mind instead of show looks, this way we can take advantage of that as well.

I think "reserving the track" would be financially out of the question!!

Supposedly, thay have added 200' extra shut down area recently.

Oh, by the way--before anyone asks, just because we have it at the strip does not mean you have to go out and run your car--not even pay car entry--the "Gathering" can be (and should in my opinion), be out in the general parking area right as you go through the main gates out by the road! At most you might have to pay 10.00 (spectator admission) so we can watch everybody else run--have access to the concession stands/ bathrooms/ETC.

I think that is a cool idea. A smaller track like that might be more apt to let us throw our own little gathering there thana larger one. Who knows, if we made it a traditional thing we may even get it sponsored and turn it into a big deal.

Well, if ya'll have it next month I won't be attending. If Kitt's down in the midst of the swap, I'll still try to come though. We just might have to bring the Dippy and make a few runs in that!

I believe the Temple Acadamy 1/4mile track in Temple Texas 45mins North of Austin is available for rent at very reasonable pricing.

I don't know what my work schedule's going to look like during summer (assuming I can get a job...anybody know any computer tech jobs paying above 7 an hour in the North or NorthEast Houston Area?)...

But anything you guys finalize I will put up on the gathering site. I'll check back up on this thread to make sure I'm not missing anything.

I am up for a gathering anytime.. as you guys already know.

Even with the extra 200' of shutdown area, its still too small. But the track is very nice, and we probabally wouldn't even need to 'reserve' it. There wasn't many cars running when I went.

I'm down with embarrassing myself at the track for the next meeting. :lala:

I think it would be more fun to watch you other guys with the real cars running against each other though......even thought i know Mike will think of some reason to not run his car

I'm down for anytime also.....lets just not wait too late, cause summer sure gets hot.

I'll be there, car or not, but HOPEFULLY, my car will be on the road by next month. Thats if I can get the tranny rebuilt and get my converter back from Precision Industries after it gets flushed and re-stalled in time I'd really like to goto Baytown for some 1/4 mile action, but the 1/8 mile track @ HMP would probably be a lot closer for everyone, and the number of runs everyone could get in would be almost limitless (if the crowd is similar to the last time we went). Did HMP even have a "general admission" parking area? I think you have to pay to get to any parking area, not sure though.

Why not pay?

10 bux is cheap. That's like the cost of a cheap 12 pack... it'd be nice if we could find a nice deserted park with a 4 lane stretch of un-patrolled road. Maybe have someone bring a tree.....LOL. That way we could party, BBQ, Drag, and have no worries (never happen though )

I'm always up for some track time. Hopefully by then I can get my car on a dyno and get a good tune in it, pick up some more power.

I'm up for the second or third weekend in June. I'm on leave from 5 June till 26 June, so hopefully we can have it sometime in there.

It's still a little early yet to have a summer gathering. Sometime in July maybe a little better for some people.

That's what it's all about. We didn't (or at least I didn't) build this car to be a trailer queen. And if I hook it up so hard that I grenade something...Oh, well. I'll fix it.

Hey Dude--I'll get Mrs. ZAP to bring out her RS with the stock 2.6L so U can whip up on her! That should make U feel better--or would it? What if she wins?

Just out of curosity--what's your infatuation with the 6 cyl anyway?

I have usually organized the SWMG "South West Mini-Gathering" in the past. It's twice a year. However, I do not have the time now, since I've been spending most of my time with my new business.
So, I need someone who can organize this gathering.
Here's what I've done in the past:
-Go to the track the night before
-Have lunch (cookout, possibly)
-Then go to a park and take pics and hang out

Any volunteers?

Jason

HAHAHAA I'll run a V8, heck, I'll run whatever lines up to me, my pride only gets hurt when I win.

How about Austin? Half-way.. A big *** cruise from Houston to Austin or from SA to Austin would be most bad ***. Hell I had a blast cruising with only 3 people from Austin to H-Town for the December gathering!

Hmm.....haven't been to the capitol for awhile.
Sounds like a winner. Meet up with the Houston group just outside of Austin for the final couple of miles....
I'm in, but still need some San Antonio bodies also.

Spring Summer meet

I think that us meeting in the middle would be an awesom idea between SA and Houston possibly at a bar b que place right off I 10 some where.. we need to find a spot that will be roughly85 to 90 mile drive for the bothe of us from either way..

Yes, a meeting in Austin would rock. Lets do it!

Or perhaps some sort of cruise around downtown, i've heard of the Austin F-Body club doing this.

You could still have an early morning meeting with the respective clubs, DFW, SA, and H, before a couple hour drive to Austin.

This might work.

Now a convienient month and date.

June, July, or August?

Input?

Jim.

Hey Jim,

You know I would be willing to travel to Austin.

I have been wondering about trying to get some people together here in SA for a mini-gathering. Seems like there really is not a lot of interest in this town.

Anyone else in SA willing to try to get something going?

Thomas

I see a plethora of 3rdgens on the highway daily (just in front of the mustangs). I guess I must try to get the word out a little more.

Mmm....need some ideas! Newspaper ad?

"Own a '82-92 camaro or firebird? Thirdgen.org needs you!"

I just finished sanding down my grx for the doors and working on the ones for the rear wheels. A summer gathering for all would be great, but need to get an SA club going here.

Jim.

Jim.
maybe try and post an add stating all 82 to 92 Camaro and Firebird owners to particapate in meeting and showing there cars off to the public all makes these years and all conditions.

By the way I was wondering how many miles is Austin from SA and from Houston??

There are quite a few people with thirdgen's that show up for the Houston area thirdgen gatherings (some very nice cars) like fatal88 and 406-Z for example. These guys show up at all the Houston gatherings but I can almost gaurantee that they will only show up if the meet is in Houston. Besides, Houston is in the middle of San Antone and Dallas. You guys should come to the Houston Thirdgen gatherings (Summer meet and December Gathering).

I with the help of others will start organizing the Houston Summer gathering soon.

You San Antone, Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth and all surrounding area thirdgenner's should join us in Houston.

As soon as a place / date / time is finalized, 3.1eyecandy will have info / directions / flyers to pass out / etc... on the gathering site posted in the first topic sticky at the top of this forum.

See you guys soon,

Mike (1bad91Z)

Wow, I didn't know so many people were interested in the idea. I think we should have a semi-annual H-Town gathering. I'll still come probably. The Austin gathering idea could probably be a Texas Annual Thirdgen Gathering. Once a year, the DFW group, the SA group, and the H-Town group could all cruise to a central location (Austin) for a big-*** thirdgen meet. Let's see if we could have the biggest thirdgen gathering in the country!
It'd take some time to plan, so it probably couldn't be done this year. Anyone up to plan the Annual Texas Thirdgen Gathering sometime next spring or so??

Sounds like a plan. I think the SA group needs to get a meet together, say, sometime in June. From there see who can go to Austin.

I'll do some mapquest planning and see what it get.

Jim.
