NEW PAINT!!!

ok so i painted the camaro myself, had a bit of elp from some friends but not to much, im goin to post finished pics of it in apearance and detailing later, but here are the freshly dried, NON_SANDED or BUFFED pics with dirty wheels. there's no overspray ANYWHERE, its just dust not paint. the white spots are from razorblading the few imperfections in the clear off, and the hood alignment is not finished, but its good enough to not rub untill i sand the car and align it. let me know what you think

SOM? um, its best was a 13.1 @105 on street tires (old time slip from previous owner), since then its gotten underdrive pullies, true dual exhaust, a WAY WAY better tune, better/new ignition, a CIA, and has lost some weight, SO i dont know, mid/high12's with traction

oh, SOM = sunset oragne metallic?, yeah its acually flame red metallic, but when we id the final color coat/blend, we forgot to stir the cup, so its all gold flake on top, in the sun its the color you see, inside or at night its maroon

Re: NEW PAINT!!!

How hard was it to spray the flake evenly? I want to do a red metallic flake over black base with mine and everyone tells me its almost impossible to have the flake look even and not striped or streaked.

Re: NEW PAINT!!!

Props! Much better than what I could have done myself (I don't paint)...!

Here's my ........

I would paint headlight buckets satin black, replace park lamp housings with new GM housings, use a 4thgen stick-on nose emblem, then make air screens for the back of the grill holes.

Just food for thought.

thanks!

i left the bucked body color to see how i like them, and sating black over clear is easy, so i may or may not paint them. i think i may get the carbon fiber emblem from hawks not sure yet i may leave it shaved, or paint one like neils, but i dont wanna be a copy cat... and screens are coming along with a new CIA using the cow, or ram air from the hood scoop (< but ram air from hood = lots of problems...)

Looks good! I like that color.

I thought that first pic looked familiar. Posted that on TAMSCC, huh? (I'm Alien on those forums)

I'm hoping to make it to CS for AX1 in Knocker. Hope to see your car there in person.

i used an hvlp gun, made by husky, with a 1.34mm tip, same gun for primer, sealer, color and clear, i could have used a bigger one for the clear tho.... the gun was $49.99 at home depot lol, i have friends who have used it for cars b4, so i tried it and it worked well

Just curious but what did i cost you for the paint exct and to finish the whole thing. Im thinking a 50$$ paint job is a good idea. I have a paint booth at the race car shop so i could prollt do it in a weekend or somthing.

well the paint was 600 or 650, that was for ppg shopline epoxy primer (2 quarts), ppg shopline primer sealer(2 quarts), and 3 quarts of omni base, with 3 quarts of ppg deltron clear which was $$$$. IMO DONT do a 50$ paint job, i spent 1000 bucks on this one, EVERYTHING included, gun, booth, supplies, paint, and ALOT of man hours, it was worth it, and it feels good to do it right, and do it yourself

Re: NEW PAINT!!!

Amen I'm doing my car by myself also now and boy those door dings and pings and even chips are a PITA. My paint had at least 30 chips and they all had rust in them. So what I had to do was sand them to metal and feather edge them in. Primer will be going on soon enough. Also Like I said before good job it looks sick.

a word of advice on that, when you sand down to metal, dont feather edge the old paint to the metal, you WILL see the low spot, after its sanded, scuff it with 80 grit or so, and bondo the spot (skim coat of bondo), then get a long sanding block (long enough to reach the original paint on either side of the bare metal and sand it flat. i have spots where i sanded to metal, feather the old paint, and now i have low spots

and thanks again, if you need help or equipment for spraying i may be able to help you out if im in town, im at school at A&M in college station right now

Re: NEW PAINT!!!

No problem I know about the feather edging, I have to ask though Did you use alot of primer to fill it in and block it down? I just used a block of 320 where i feather edged them to further block them down, then filled them with primer. Ive done this before and its worked pretty well. Also if the car has many built up layers of paint, it will also affect it, Mine doesnt b/c its the original previous paint. Yea thanks on the equipment though man, Ive pretty much got my hands on everything though, I personally bought a sata jet 3000 and my dad has alot of equipment. I also have at my high school my auto body classes which has $'s of equipment.

Re: NEW PAINT!!!

with one layer of previous paint you should be ok, i have 2 layers, both were primered before painting as well. cool, you should be set then with tools, and it should come out well, just make sure you have an air/water separator between the compressor and gun, i painted on the dryest day you'll ever see in houston and i still was getting water out, even after i drained the tanks
