$1200 Paint & Body.....

The shop owner told me he would paint & do all the body work, as well as paint the moldings & trim.

One thing that concerned me was that he would not be stripping the car all the way down. Just lvling the paint. When I asked him why not he said he did not really matter its going to look good either way...

What are some key things I should ask him tomorrow before I drop the car off? Keep in mind that its going to be my daily driver, so I am not looking for show quality paint. But I do not want a job thats going to start peeling away in months.

Thanks

that's what sealer is for. Normally cars should NOT be stripped, unless there a a very good reason to do so. one you remove the factory sealer/primer, the odds of rust increase 10X

now, that doesn't mean he should just scuff and go. If he plans on sanding everything down smooth, and using a high build primer to fill in tiny scratches, there's no reason it would peel

hey how you doing, i do paint and bodywork for a living. you dont have to strip the car down before it is repainted. only time need to strip it down is when the clear coat has died and starts peeling or when there is cracks in the paint. not really to much to ask just could ask if it be base clear or single stage base clear be better. and what kind of warranty does he offer fr the paintjob. and if you are changing the color finif jams are included

Re: $1200 Paint & Body.....

When I asked the guy about a warranty he said if I like I like it if I don't I don't.....Jackass.....I will ask him to clarify that for me in the morning.

& what exactly do you mean if the clear starts peeling? How can I tell, the reason I am painting is because most of my paint already peeled off. Does that mean that the clear came off with it?

Also is there a prefered paint,or bondo? Or primer. Also how long so I expect something like this to last. He also said he would wetsand it afterwards.

he does sound a bit like a jackass.. Look around his shop at other cars he has finished up with. if they look good, I bet you'll like your car

My second biggest concern is, how long the paint will stay on the car before it starts peeling & does waxxing it on a regular basis and keeping it clean really extend the life of the paint? Or is just a bunch of marketing malarky

I would be concerned about using a guy like that. Did you get referred to him by someone that had their car painted by him? If you didn't, I would stray away from him! I would talk to a few of the guys behind the counters at some of the better parts stores. Usually they will know good body shops if they actually work on cars. My parts guy at the NAPA store turned me on to a great body man. It's worth a shot. Just do your homework before you jump into something like that is all I'm saying. Post some pics on here when you get it done!

Good luck,
Dave

If you do want a warranty, write up a simple contract and make him sign it. Otherwise, you are just listening to hot air that comes out of his mouth.

Re: $1200 Paint & Body.....

Most reputable shops will warranty a paint job atleast somewhat. The collision repair shop I work at has been in business for over 30 years and we offer a pretty comprehensive warranty on all paint jobs, at no extra charge. $1200 for a full paint job is pretty fair, but i wouldn't do any business with that guy if he is gonna tell you basically if you don't like the paint job, too bad.

As for cleaning and waxing. its essential in keeping your paint looking good for many years. The actual paint on the car isnt the real important part, the clear coat on top of it is. That clear coat is what takes all the damage and corrosion from dirt, uv rays, salt, road grim, and everything else your car is exposed to. Cleaning all that crap off the car keeps it from being able to really damage the clear coat, and wax gives just an extra layer of protection. All that grim attacks the wax instead of the clear coat.
