F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

Instead of going off a thread from two years ago, lets get the G-15 thread started here.
The dates are not yet posted but its ususally during the Memorial Day Weekend. It runs from Friday to Sunday, but there is a breakfast on Monday morning.
As it is planned and posted lets keep the information in this thread. Same with discussions or plans.
I would like to see a TGO section this year.

So say we all?

Re: F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

I've been going to this show since it was called the Camaro Street Nationals back in the 80's. It got boring back in the late 90's because it just started looking like a gm dealership with all new cars and not much older stuff to look at. It's still 4th gen heavy, but the 1st-3rd gens are starting to show up more. I've driven my car there the last 2 years but havent' entered it. No one is ever very interested in a V6 SC Camaro. Still like hanging out with everyone though. I'll be there this year again.

I wanna see as many 3rd gens as possible. Next year it'll probably be overrun with 4th and 5th gens, so let's try to get as many 3rd gens as possible. I'd love to see some nice cars and get some new ideas.

I judged some of the 2010's in G-14. Try judging new cars... One has to be very picky to find the best ones, however some of them are driven, so there are differences. I expect the real differences to appear as people bring now 98 point 2010's to compete with pristine undriven 100 point 2011's. They might make another class. The V-6 cars usually get a lot of attention at the Gatherings. I say, go ahead and bring what you got, it will be fun either way. My car is a 29K mile all original trailer queen 1986 F code WS6 with t-tops, and it usually does pretty decent in the show, however a couple of years ago I was planning on buying a pitiful 1991 RS V-6 that had lead a pretty tough life. I was going to bring it and put it in the exibition class, which allows one to show, but is not judged. If anyone heads for G-15 and does not make it there due to a mechanical problem, those of us with trailers have been known to go and pick up the person and car, and haul it to the gathering. Then it is pretty easy to get some help getting her running again. It is a nice group. We usually get there on Thursday and stay until Monday. The couple of extra days allows for a more relaxed time. A TGO group would be cool. We need to get a count and contact Chad or Andy and make a request for some space.

Re: F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

Thanks, looking forward to it. My car will be one of the nicest V6 cars in the country by the time I'm done with it, but it all depends on what the judges are looking for. If a 2011 V6 shows up and they are looking for a Factory fresh original car, I don't have a chance. Same goes for a trailer queen TTA.

<fbodygathering.com>

Take a look at the website. One of the tabs has the classifications in it. Your 89 V-6 will be compared with other V-6 cars of the same era.

My 86 Trans AM competes in the stock 82-87 Firebird class. The class is pretty limited, because there are not that many original stock birds that age left in good shape. The only reason that my car has earned some wins is that no one has brough out one of those rare museum pieces with 500 miles on it. There are many thirdgens at the gathering that put my car to shame, however most of them are in the modified class, and have undergone some restoration work as well as mods.

What the judges are instructed to look for is condition and cleanlness. Options and equipment count for nothing. If the car has no blemishes, then it is probably going to earn a win of some sort.

thanks I saw there was a v 6 classification, but I didn't see that it was broken down by generation. that gives me hope. it's a long drive but I'm hoping to make it in 2012

this is what the website says.... you can see why I though it looks like I would judges against all other V6 camaros, regardless of age..

"You will have the option of showing your car in this combined class for V6 Fbodies. However if you prefer to show in one of the primary classes, you may. We will award the Top 6 cars."

This past year I had done just that...went against all V6 FBodies(don't just figure Camaros are the only thing being judged, you have the Firebirds to contend with as well,) and I ended up bringing home nothing. I had just had the car repainted so it was pretty clean outside, the interior was clean(except for the trunk area), engine bay was clean minus the bumper support being a different color. I'll have to check this year and see if they really will break it down to 88-92' years that I can put myself into. There were way more V6's than I had anticipated that showed up and they were very nice cars. I had no chance. If you do show, we'll be in the same class. I really haven't done anything to the car since last year and don't plan on taking anything home this year either....unless....come ooooon tax return!!!

Re: F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

I think you can enter in your year class with V8's. That might limit the number in your class. They further break down the year groups into stock mod and up classes. However any body cuts, including roll bars will put you in pro class. I found that out in G13, my first.

It's all about the fun anyway!

Re: F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

As we see on this board countless times and places... many f-body owners look down on V6 cars... I'm not sure which is worse, going up against all years of V6, or competing against V8's.

maybe they will break down v6's by year too... that would be nice

Re: F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

The reason other than looking at the Fbodygathering website that I figured the V6 class is all generations in a class of it's own is due to the lack of them showing up. The majority is V8's....so why should they split the 6's up? I honestly don't think they do. Your either against other V6's or the V8's Mark.

I guess the fairest thing is to go up against other cars of the same year, and hope the judges don't show an anti-V6 bias.

The V8's in our year class have amazing cars. You really are better off being in the V6 class. You'll be up against 69' thru 2011 though. There were only 4th-5th gens this past year though(from what I remember.)

There is no bias. In fact they go out of thier way to make sure that the V-6 people get a fair share of the limelight. I can't remember how they did G-15, however I remember them splitting the V-6 class in G-14. Jim wants above all, to be fair to everyone, and will split classes any way he has to so that everyone's car is judged fairly. If my old memory is working correctly, I think that there were a total six V-6 wins at G-14. During G-15 I was so busy I did not notice how the other classes were handled. I do know that several of the 2010 V-6 cars were not judged in the V-6 class, but judged in the 2010 class. One of the winners in the class that I judged was a 100 point completely perfect V-6 car. It is not fair to compare a 1989 to a 2010. Even if you bought the car new trailered it home, never drove it, and stored it in a giant zip lock bag it is going to have more wear and tear then a near new car.Even if you decide to enter your car in it's class based on year, it will still be judged strickly on condition and how clean it is. We also do not check the undercarriage, but do check under the hood, interior, door jambs, and trunk, and again only for condition. During G-14 it rained all weekend, and we were instructed not to count off for water spots.

thanks for clarifying... the quoted part was my concern. I'm glad to hear you say that they are fair to v6 owners, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they clarify it on the website this year. who knows, I may make it out there this year to soak in the environment, and then that will inspire me to get busy on fixing up my car the way I want it for the next year.

Re: F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

Sounds good Mark, Our first gathering was G13. I had shown my car at some local shows, and it had won nothing at all. It seems that when one is parked next to a pristine period correct 1956 Chevy vert on one side, a Model A on the other, and a perfect 57 T-Bird right behind, no matter how nice a thirdgen is or any F-body for that matter, it is not going to get much attention from that group. We went to G-13 just to see how different it would be to associate with only F-body people. Still I figured that thirdgens would still be snubbed. It was an eye opening experience. Not only were the thirdgens respected for their place in F-body history, but we are encouraged and cheered on. They don't make us feel like TURDGEN stepchildren. There are no V-6 stepchildren either. My car is not perfect. It is a 29K mile highly optioned original car, that has some wear and tear on it. It is not a musuem piece, but is a nice example. My wife and I were blown away when we got a first place win for our class at G-13. As far as the gathering, the car show is secondary. The gathering is the primary focus. Andy and Chad are the promoters/owners of the show. Their goal is to gather as many F-body folks as possible, have a great time, and enjoy the cars. You will never meet a friendlier nicer bunch of people! As for the first time that I judged, I asked some specific questions from Jim and Mike who are the ones in charge of judging. They make the final decisions related to how the classes are divided, and who wins what based on the volunteer judges' score sheets. If they are uncomfortable or in question about a score, they personally rejudge the car for themselves. Jim answered my questions with "I don't want anyone offended, and want everyone to get some pie on their face." It is a car show like no other. The first time you attend the Gathering, you will be hooked. For Betty and I it feels like the family reunion that we don't want to miss. Hope to see you there, and good luck on your restoration.

Re: F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

I sent a PM to Chad and Andy over at the Gathering site, and asked them if it is possible for us to get a TGO section? For several years a few of us have grumbled about having a TGO section, however to my knowledge it has never happened. I was told last year that the reason is that many TGO members are also members of local clubs, and they park with their local clubs.

If we want this to happen, we need to get the number of people who want to park together so we can make a formal request. We should also consider gatting a TGO banner. I have a 10 X 20 all white canopy that I can bring for us to use as TGO headquarters. Than everyone can bring some chairs and their own brand of liquid refreshment, and we can be the TURDGEN FORCE OF G-15.

I believe they had a TGO area at G14 but no one was there till Saturday. I started to park up there but I've been in the same area, same room for both of the ones we've been to. Getting old, stuck in my ways. LOL

Re: F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

I wanted to add that the awards are only a small part of the weekend. The real treat is seeing the cars, meeting the owners, and getting ideas for your own car. Although it is nice to receive an award. G13 was my first gathering I went to, and won a v6 award(although 4th gen :P) I didn't have anything special just a 1998 Camaro with the clear coat peeling off the bumper :S but I guess we did a decent job of cleaning her up.

I didn't enter the show expecting to win anything, but I wanted to be a part of it. Plus, the more participants, it really helps support the show. I'm sure there's a lot of time, effort, and money put in to make this happen, so it's always a good idea to support them.

What class were you in?

I will be parked with the Z28.com crowd, sorry guys. I've got a lot of close friends from all over the country in that group, some of which have made road trips to my house in summers past for get togethers. I will definitely hang out with y'all but my car will be parked in the midst of 4th and 5th gens.

Modified camaro....if you show I am gonna lose...my car isn't that nice just didn't have much to compete with so my cars won first and second in class even though this kandy RS with IROC hood should have won....

That's cool. I'm going to have to check out the classes, I thought there was stock, modified, and super modified...I'm not sure which of the modified classes mine would fit into, but I'm excited to go this year. Don't give up the race before it starts, my car is photogenic, but I'm it's master and I know every single imperfection on the car.

Hmm, hopefully my high rise spoiler mod doesn't count as a "body cut". I didn't cut the body of the car, I cut up the spoiler to make it fit, but that's it.

I doubt it. It's mainly for caged cars, tubbed cars, wider fenders, etc etc. I doubt a spoiler change would do it even though it took some minor mods.

i went to 10 and 13. at 13 i brought the family along. my kids enjoyed themselves. my youngest daughter got up early and wanted to help polish up the car and get it ready for the show. show organizers there even made her he own participation identification card and gave her a goody bag. that was apreciated and she wore the entire time. they are also looking forward to going again.

Re: F-body Gathering G-15 Atlanta, Ga.

If remember correctly (brain is getting old) it costs $50.00 per car to enter the show. It's cheap entertainment! I spend more on diesel fuel for the F-350 to tow the TA down and back than on the entering the show.

The regular price on the rooms at the Marriott generally go for $140.00 to $160.00 per night, however Andy negotiates a group discount every year with the hotel. The last two years the room charges have been $85.00 per night. The Gathering is held in the parking area of a wing of the hotel. That whole side of the building is all people attending the Gathering. Many of the rooms overlook the parking lot, so the show is right outside of your window.

Anyway, as all who have attended before have said, the awards are just a small part of the entire "vacation." It's a fun and friendly environment with a lot going on, especially at night once the young ones have gone to bed. See you all there, i'll be parked with F-Body Inc.
