Engine Keeps Running

My engine keeps running when I turn it off. Only for about 5 seconds after I turn it off. Has anyone ever had this problem? Any suggestions on how to correct this?

I think they call this dieseling?? That might be wrong though. I know this sounds dumb but is it running really hot? Do you have enough coolant in the car? I think it goes something like its running hot enough that even after you shut it off that it keeps running. Someone more knowledgeable on the subject can correct me My $25 grand prix used to do this but only because it ran really hot because it had a blown head gasket and it was always really really low on coolant.

The combustion chamber is probably getting so hot that the mixture just lights off from the heat. Which is what diesels do, so dieseling would be appropriate there's may be some wierd electrical ignition capacitatorameter thing that I don't know about, but that's because I'm dumb

I had this problem on my car when I had wired something wrong. Look at the fuse box and check and see if theres any wires running into any of the ignition spots. I had my fan wired in one and it fed the ignition power for a few seconds after the key had been turned off. I bet you have something "extra" wired there thats feeding the ignition power.

A high idle speed will cause run-on when the engine is hot also.

My car had a similar problem, it would run for about 2 seconds and then shake after I turned the ignition off. I adjusted the timing and it has been fine ever since.

Try running a tank of 91 octane, if you haven't already done that yet.

my car diesels now after a tbi to carb swap, and yes even i ran the fuel pump elay wire to the fan wire Which in turn is plugged into the fuse box, ....i think some fuses have a delay of some sort and it just doesnt realize the car is off yet, maybe a capacitor is still holding a small charge after the car is shut off and it releases its stored potential when the car shuts off, thus making it run for 5 seconds.

i say play with the way its wired up

if you have a volt meter / multimeter...preferably digital.....hook the ground up somewhere near the fuse box...i always clamp the ground onto the lil door button thing that makes your car go beeep if its not depressed. switch, whatever the hell its called...buzzer switch? nayways, what it is, isnt important.....just hook a ground to it, and stick the positive end on the fuse you have the fuel pump wired into, and turn the key, if it carrys voltage for any amount of time after the car is shut off, ...thats the problem

and no, a test light will not work...it has to be a multi meter, easily readable.
