Swapping from open 2.73's to posi 3.42's

I would like to do this swap with a rear end from another 3rd gen. My question is, how plentiful are these at junk yards these days and what basic reconditioning can I expect. And how much should I expect to pay?

Also, what kind of gains should I see in the 1/4 mile if I am running 16.4 now?

Any input would help. Thanks.

Finding a posi will be the hardest. Most were v6 cars with open carriers and drums. Then finding a 90-92 with the 28 spline will be harder still. Since you have a 92, I'd just put gears and posi into that.

With the age of these cars and trying to find a 3:42 with a Limited slip in good shape is becoming a little difficult. It also depends on the area you live in.

Do this:

Buy the posi from camarostud, then go to almost ANY local junkyard that has camaros, and scope out the V6 thirdgens with a rearend code list handy. The majority of V6 thirdgens came with 3.42's, and at worst came with 3.23's, and since you are getting hte rearend out of a V6 car, the junkyards don't think they are worth squat. In the local Marana "u pull it" junkyard, they charge a flat rate of $90 for those rearends. Thats what I have in my girlfriends vortec 350 powered 85 trans am. Works great needs posi though.

Btw........get the rearend first, THEN worry about a posi. Your motor doesn't make nearly enough power to warrant the high cost of a posi unit, especially if you are already running decent tires. Back when my girlfriends 85 T/A had a 305 with a cam, intake, exhaust and gears it went 14.5's @95 all day long with good street tires, stock suspension and a peg leg rearend doing 2.0 60 fts.

as far as gain?? With your setup, at least half a second, 2.73 just kill the power on the low end.

No kidding.

azvolfan, If you peice it together, what ever you do, make sure the axle splines match the # of carrier splines. 28 is best.

Axle/Gears: Don't care!
I'm glad this thread was started because my '91 Z came with posi and 3.23's and I've been aching for 3.42's since the day I got it.

I think 3.73's would be too much considerring how much freeway driving I do on a daily basis and I'd be watching my gas gauge steadily dropping..

Do you guys think getting the gears from a junkyard is safe? A set of gears aren't cheap by any means. But if I could get 3.42's from a V6 3rd Gen for under 100 bux, I'd do it. At least I'd be comfortable thinking that not all that much was pushing them with the V6.

Changing gears is not a DIY job for most people.

89 and up came with 28 spline.

88 and down came with 26 spline.

You should honestly NOT be concerned about getting 28 splines axles for strength with your setup. Its is a huge myth going around especially on this website that even with a stock 305 you need beefed up axles because 26 spline axles aren't strong enough. That is utter BS. I've been running a stock 26 spline stock posi rearend in my car for a few years with a strong 350 behind it, and just recently with my new motor pulling 1.7 60 fts and not a hitch yet.

However..........since you have a 28 spline rearend...........you could do this. You could buy any older V6 thirdgen 3.42 rearend with 26 spline axles (88 and older, which is btw much more common in junkyards), swap in your 28 spline axles from you stock 92 rearend, and then buy a torsen-zexel slp take off posi for $99 from SLP. That would get you a 3.42 rearend with a brand new posi, stronger 28 spline axles, all for around $250 depending on how much you get the 3.42 V6 rearend for. Sounds like a good plan to me.........

Don't let a drum rear stop you. You can hack and drill a drum brake flange so discs will fit.

I agree. Something else in the rear will usually granade before the the axles. But if azvolfan is going to go to the trouble to put in a posi and set up gears, might as well get the stronger parts. And since he has a 92 rear, it makes sense to use 28s and just get a posi and gears. He should be aware that if he gets an 82-88 rear, he will be downgrading the strength of the axles from factory and will not be compatible if he wished to upgrade to the newer 28 spline posi's without swaping the axles too. Whether he can snap them or not with a 305 has never been questioned.

I went with a 3.42, posi, disk rear out of a fourthgen car (95 Transam) which is great, only problem is it sticks the tires out a little bit. Dropped .3 or something like that

A hefty chunk.. truck freight.. 100 or more =\

Watch the local and azstarnet classifieds.. some dude in tucson parted out an '87 a few months back and dumped a posi disc rear for 100 bucks.. wish I'd had the money.

what about allmustangs the wrecking yard in tempe.. they have all mustangs and f-body's there... you could probably pick up a 6 speed rear end for pretty cheap...

when i was piecing together my rear end i picked up 3:42 gears from camaroz28.com for 40 bucks slp take off posi for 99 bucks.. and install kit for 99 bucks.. i have been waiting to install for 2 yrs now.. lol

I like my 3.08's. For not having any major mods it adds a good little 'omph' to my 1/4 (ask bill, he knows ) but I would LOVE to get rid of the pegleg. I need to get me one of those things Sebastian has... At that AllMustangs place what majority generation did you see there? (of F-Body's)

You would to! j/k. I know you'd kick my butt in you RS now, so yeah, I know better Unfortunatly I'll be working tmo night, err tonight, I guess, so I can't go. 75% of the time Target has me closing Wednsdays. Ohh well. I was thinking about Firebird on Fri. if I can make it though. That one is still up in the air though. Hell, one of these days I'll make it out to speedworld, I've never even seen it!

It's nothing special.

I've got the Camaro down to 16.2 and I have another new chip on the way. I was hoping to get it today. But it did not come. So I am going to take the T/A out to Speedworld. I took off the tiny little airbox and put on a cone filter. So I want to see if it is any better. I'll let ya know.

So far I have not betten your 15.9 but the new chip may change that. I'll post some camaro times when I get it out to the track. Might be a week or two though.

Later.

As far as Firebird on Friday, I have to work. But if I can get off early I might just show up for a few runs.

Let me know if you go.
