Chandler area help!

i was wondering if anyone know someone who will install a fuel pump for cheap or if someone has a garage that can help me out installing a fuel pump. i live in a apartment complex so wrenching isnt an option at the moment unless i get the car towed to my dads house in n. phoenix. im on a tight budget right now since the holidays is right around the corner. also i have custom full exhaust system and wouldnt want to hack that at all since im on a budget. is there any other route i can go? cheaper? i just order a fuel pump so it should be here by friday. i do plan on putting a walbro 255 fuel pump in the near future. any inputs would be appreciated. thanks

Re: Chandler area help!

Well i live in a apartment too so I wont beable to help. But I have a couple questions and maybe a suggestion.

Is your exhuast fully welded or can it be removed in pieces? If its fully welded you wont beable to drop the tank out without cutting it.

Without a lift of some sort you could always make a access door. Some people think its a hack job but it is a way around dropping the tank. You woulc have to cut the floor out in the trunk space then reattach the peice removed once your done. I think if you do a search on here there is a write up of how to do this.

Re: Chandler area help!

Hey.
yeah i dont have a lift and i live at a apartments. Also my exhaust is welded on and i wouldnt want to cut it up. But the access door sound like something i can do without disturbing anyone at my apartment complex. If the modification is done the right way i dont consider it a "Hack Job".

Re: Chandler area help!

Changing the pump sucks They will have to cut your exhaust off and its like 10 hours of labour if I remember right. I had this done once and I will never do it again, its a total waste of money and they never seem to put the exhaust back on right. I cut a hole in the body to access the pump so I can change the pump in about an hour on the side of the road if needed. Its totally worth it you would probly need to do it at your dads though you need to do alot of cutting and be super careful when cutting the fuel lines. If you cut them with a emty tank and it explods you could kill yourself.

Re: Chandler area help!

just had mine replaced..cost 800 bills....i had just finished all the supension and had an exhaust system put on. i didnt wanna cut a hole in the trunk or cut the exhuast off(which they did and wow did they do a shitty job welding it back together,)either for access so i let some1 else do it. It took them about 10hrs.....def sucks b/c of the hole in my walllet but atleast its guaranteed and its there problem if it goes again anytime soon. if i had a car lift i wouldve done it myself. good luck

If anyone else here needs to change the fuel pump and doesn't want to cut the exhaust, you can always remove the right side shock and trailing arm. Then undo the pipe after the cat. You could take out the whole muffler as an assembly and be able to put it back in when finished. Also remember to be careful about the filler neck and getting the tank in place when getting it together. Good luck with this in the future.

Re: Chandler area help!

What the hell? I've always used "oil change ramps" to lift the car, or just jack stands. And it takes maybe three hours at the most. One time my ex called me and told me they wanted to charge her $600 to change it in her 86 coupe, and I thought that was way too much so I did it for her (free) at her apartment, she just paid $65 for the pump. I used a hacksaw for the exhaust and just used a coupler to put it back together. Shops are expensive now! What do they charge now like $95/hour for labor?

People have all different levels of abilities. One of my buddies here in Kingman can drop a ThirdGen tank on the street, change the pump, and have it running in a couple of hours -- but I sure can't! In fact most can't.

Removing/replacing the gas tank and exhaust system is a nasty, awkward PTA without the added grunge of doing it on frozen ground. And honestly, it takes a real "King Kong" to wrestle the filler neck up through the little tunnel through the 1/4 panel to the filler door.

That's why many ThirdGenners opt for a system to change the pump without dropping all that stuff in the rear, with the added benefit of being able to do a 15-minute roadside fuel pump replacement with simple hand tools.

Re: Chandler area help!

It is a PITA, I wish I would have made the access door when I had the tank out. I had three chances but it never occurred to me...

Chandler area help!

I know the feeling, I just put a Walbro 255 iin and a Mufflex 4" exhaust with a Spintech Dual Exhaust. It would have life so much easier to change it with everything out of the way.
