help! NEED T.P.I 350, A.S.A.P. IN PHX.AREA

I,M HOPING SOMEONE CAN HELP ME! MY DAILY-DRIVER '90 RS V-6'S TRANNY FINALLY GAVE UP, AND WHILE I HAVE BEEN BUILDING A NEW 700R4 (ALMOST DONE.) TO INSTALL WHEN I DO AN ENGINE SWAP, I WASNT PLANNING ON DOING THIS SO SOON. THERE IS A LOT OF STUFF I NEED BUT DONT HAVE. ANY ONE WHO HAS PARTS OR KNOWLEDGE (OR BOTH?) OF THIS SORT OF SWAP, I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT. I HAVE A LOT OF QUESTIONS AND NOT A LOT OF ANSWERS... THE TUNED PORT 350 HAS BEEN HARDER TO FIND THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.

IF ANY OF YOU HAVE ANY LEADS ON THIS STUFF PLEASE CALL OR E-MAIL!
THANKS!
-JASON.

Thanks man, I really appreciate that! I really need to get this car back on the road! I know i'm going to need a new fuel pump among other things. getting that pump out is not easy!!! ( I refuse to cut a hole in the floor!) is there some kind of kit (or method) to put an inline pump in insted of the in-tank pump? I'm just worried that the cost will be so high... I'm a little far from u. (Wittmann).

Re: help! NEED T.P.I 350, A.S.A.P. IN PHX.AREA

Well, getting the tank out and back in is a chore, but I think it's worth it. I just did a carb to tpi swap in my bird and thought the whole thing was worth the time and energy. I used a 350 block from an 82 Caprice and the heads were off my 305 engine that came with the car. Don't cut the hole in the floor. There is no need to and it will take as much time to do it that way as it would to take the tank out to begin with. Here's what you will need to start:

350 block
small block chevy heads
(don't let people tell you that tpi won't work unless it's a "tpi" engine)
TPI intake with as much as you can get with it (sensors, harness, etc.)
-can be off 305 or 350, doesn't matter if it's a daily driver
-if you can get the ECM, get it (ECM is matched to injector impedance)
As long as you have a 700R4 that is shaped to fit the block you will be fine.
Get the wire diagram and vacuum diagram for the year set up you want to use.
Any hoses you can get new (most hoses don't cost that much) get.
- try not to do too much used rubber.
Get as much parts as you can for the year of system you are using so the parts will match up better and less problems. If you need any parts, let me know and I'll see what I have or help to get these parts for you.

Chris

Re: help! NEED T.P.I 350, A.S.A.P. IN PHX.AREA

You can get a new crate 350 motor complete (except the intake manifold and carb) from midway chevy for around 1400.00 to 1600.00. I got mine two years ago from Midway nissan (across the street) for 1150.00 . they used to advertise wholesale parts in the phone book. They do not advertise that anymore, but the older employees that remenber it will still honor it.The engine runs great it was assembled in 1997 and dynoed and then created up. I only recommend that you dont put new engine too old transmission, (I had too replace the tranny two months later, They also have rebuilt 700R4, I got mine for 950.00)

birdtojag What do you think of a 383? Should I use a '87 or newer block if I'm going to build it. I may as well use a 4 bolt main block. It will be expensive if I have to put it all together (machine shop services...buying all the parts new and used reconditioned) I may have a harness and ECM (not sure if either any good) It came with my El-Camino, which had a tpi motor before I got it. Still need either a in-tank or in -line fuel pump. Which is better? Appreciate your help... Jason

Kellman3 That sounded great except that even after I buy the long block, I still need pulleys, sensors, accessories, complete 7pi intake, injectors, electronics, and ETC. This will get incredible expensive! I would like to do it that way but I'm having my transmission (got a V-8 case) and having my tranny rebuilt using a Hugh master racing kit. (still need a torque converter) I appreciate your help... Jason

I used pullys and exhast manifold and etc. off my old engine. Do you not have all that stuff? A couple of weeks ago I met a guy with a 1990 TA, and i was telling him about Hawks third gen for parts. He called me last week and told me that the interior parts was going too be to expensive for him to reatore his TA too former glory. He asked if I knew if anyone wanted to buy his TA for 500.00-600.00. It still runs and he used it to go to work and stuff. If I recall its the same engine as yours, If you can afford it to salvage what you need and part the rest it might be worth your time to look at. His name is Chris and his number is 623-329-1996. I don't know if he still has it, it was five days ago since I last talked too him. Good luck

Re: help! NEED T.P.I 350, A.S.A.P. IN PHX.AREA

No, I dont have most of the brackets and pulleys that I will need. I am switching from A 3.1 V-6 to a T.P.I. 350 (or 383 if the cost is not too much more.) The a/c compressor will probably still work for me, but I dont know about anything else. I am really worried about the brackets. A while ago my power steering bracket broke completely off the engine shearin the bolt off in the water pump. I was able to get a new water pump, no problem, but the dealer wanted a fortune for the bracket! (something like 300.oo if I remember right) 3 weeks of searching the u-pull-it junkyards I finally found it! (20 bucks, go figure...) I called that number. They said wrong number. thanks for thinking of me, anyway. I am beginning to get really discouraged... I will press on,though.

I talked with him yesterday about the 350. Without the carb and intake he would sell you the engine for 600.00, He said he would be intrested about your 6 cylinder so maybe you guys can work out a better deal

Re: help! NEED T.P.I 350, A.S.A.P. IN PHX.AREA

I appreciate the help. Right now I'm looking at a 6.0 LS-2 that a friend of a friend is selling complete with a t-56 tranny out of a wrecked GTO. the price is too good to be true so I'm having my friend check it out.( It's in L.A.) I'll let you know. I'm not sure if I would put the T-56 in my camaro or stay with my 700R4. Any thoughts?

if you decide to say with the 700R4, i will buy the T-56 >.> but i would stay with the T-56. also, if the LS2 falls through, i know of a 383 for sale, rated at over 400 HP

I wont forget. Yeah, I have been thinking of weather or not to put the T-56 in or not. Still not sure. this car is the one I like to drive to work and back so for rush hour traffic the auto would be nice (Although the guys at the tranny shop tell me the rebuilt unit is going to shift " VERY FIRM" whatever that means to them. To me that means I will have a constant case of whiplash!)
Jason.

I started pulling my motor today. I went to the swap meet at G.C.C. today. That was kind of disappointing. there was a guy selling a pair of new headers & y-pipe for a L-98 for 250.00., but other than that not much. I think the hardest part of the swap is going to get the emissions equipment right.
