Open Element/ Emissions Q's

Ok im looking to get rid of the stock air cleaner assy. on my camaro, wanted to go open element seeing how its the easiest and cheapest route, but i realized that the breather tube on my valve cover would be rendered useless so should i just push a breather filter in there with the open element??

And would i be able to pass the visual here without the factory setup or should i just save my stuff

id rather not play the emissions rush game because i used to do it with my 81 K10 and that was hell, id rather not do it again

Re: Open Element/ Emissions Q's

Most open air elements have knock-outs on the bottom part of the tray. check to see if there is one and find a way to hook up that filter tube to it. That's about all you will need to do.

Re: Open Element/ Emissions Q's

I would keep the old stuff and put it back on for emissions. I've been busted before because of that stupid breather tube on my duallie

Re: Open Element/ Emissions Q's

i dont think it will fit.... just turn the black hose face it forward doesn't look too bad, or just buy new valve covers with a spot for a breather

Re: Open Element/ Emissions Q's

I passed visual last weekend with an open element; they didn't even blink. I do have my breather tube hooked up to it though.

Re: Open Element/ Emissions Q's

You also need that hot-air tube that goes from the driver's side exhaust manifold up to the bottom of the air intake. It looks like a section of dryer hose.

Some techs might overlook it, though.

Re: Open Element/ Emissions Q's

yeah they failed me for it the first time i went thru emissions, im thinking running the stock stuff and then flipping them after i pass will be the easiest way, as much as i hate doing that lol

i dont know why but the stations around here are such jerks, they overheated my car the first time and killed it, then it wouldnt start and they just said tough luck, you failed.

But after that i didnt change anything, went to a different one and passed with flying colors. Figure that one out

Re: Open Element/ Emissions Q's

If it's not your only car, insure it as a limited use collector car and just skip emissions completely. That's what I'm doing with my 79, 82, and, soon, the 92. Not because they won't pass, just because I don't want to deal with taking them in.

Re: Open Element/ Emissions Q's

If they overheat your car again, file a complaint with ADOT. I did and they granted me a free re-test when it failed on my re-test. Also cheated a bit - changed cats and added 3 bottles of rubbing alcohol in the tank. The people at these stations are idiot for the most part. They can care less about how they treat your car and don't pay any attention about how it works. They aimed the fan at the top of my engine instead of under the car for the radiator. Higher temps will give you higher emissions. Let me know if you have any trouble getting through and we will figure out a way.

Re: Open Element/ Emissions Q's

Just get a breather filter that replaces the tube, it goes right onto the valve cover.

Removing hoses and replacing them with breather filters is not emissions-legal and will not pass the test.

The emissions laws cover all 50 states, even if you're not tested. But if you're not tested, then nobody's gonna check you.... yet.
