We live in California. Removing your smog equipment is a federal offense punishable by a $10,000 fine, jail time, or both. And you wont pass the visual emissions test either.
However, everything except the EGR can be removed and the computer wont care. The EGR system will set a code 32 if removed.

thats funny...
when i went to smog my car both times the egr wasnt working, and everythings new, but the point is is that its apparently not working and im not getting any codes. did you do anything when you did the chip? or maybe it is working...i dont know...but you can do that with the chip right? so when i get the stealth ram i wont be running a code for the rest of my days?

Yah, I probably removed the EGR Code 32 when I did your chip. Even with the Stealth Ram, how are you going to get this passed the visual smog check we have in California?

Other people have said a good way to get around the tailpipe part is to take a similar car and swap the tag or something but I never looked into that way of doing it so I can't say it would work for sure.

This is how it is done
Now if you think about it. they visual inspect meaning hands on.. That means every thing that the comp asks for them to check they check. but in a smog dyno case an a 2 stage smog. were there is 2 speed limits on the vehicle. How they determine this is from scaning your reg. into the comp. if dmv wants you to pass a 2 speed test, and thats where the same make emisssions buddy comes in handy with a passing vehicle if you can't pass the test. if ya can. and they just enter an pass the hands on. It all depends on your tail pipe of that vehicle now.. This is the way I see it, an figure this is the roll.. I had to pass a 2 speed test with my Flamed Roc.. no problem past.. Peace

Sure, but what you guys suggest is cheating and highly illegal. I'm proud to say my car runs 12 second ET's and is smog legal. Removing your smog equipment and polluting the air is what gives our hobby a bad name. When you get caught, it'll get added to the database and the "greenpeace" politicians will use it against us to create more smog laws. Sorry I disagree with you guys, but its the way I feel. There's plenty of room for high horsepower cars and keeping the air clean at the same time.

its a secret. since i moved up to northern california i learned a neat little trick. My friend has a mustang with no smog nothin and so there was no way that he was gonna get it smogged. However...there are little towns up in the moutains where you dont have to smog your car except when you sell it, ever. So all you have to do is change your address with the dmv to one of these small towns and you never have to smog your car again. unless you plan on selling it but i dont forsee that in the near future, or ever actually. And i figure that as long as i dont have black smoke bellowing out my tailpipes i figure the law enforcement wont check.

I agree with Kevin on this topic. It really pisses me off when I see the posts of those in other states gutting their cats, removing every piece of smog equipment possible, etc. Any clue why we have more cars on our roads locally every year, yet our pollution levels are improving? Between the computer-controlled fuel injection and smog equipment, the cars pollute so much less today. (Really this is nothing much to brag about, since we still rank as the highest air pollution in the nation). Any backyard mechanic with half a brain can swap a carb on and run in the 12's or better. The challenge is to make the car fast AND keep it smog legal. We all have to breathe the same air. Sorry, I'm no tree-hugger, but think about it. Where do you think the pollution will go, some other planet? Yeah, great, you've got a new trick. So do I, (1-800-288-7664). I call it quite often. It's on speed-dial on my cell phone. I especially enjoy calling on Hondas and mini-vans. My first and last time (so far) at Irwindale Speedway, while lined up to race my eyes were watering SO BADLY from the cr*p coming out of the other cars it was ridiculous! It definitely did little to contribute to my enjoyment that evening. I realize my opinion may be in the minority, but the topic really gets under my skin sometimes. Lon
If you can get away without the smog stuff, and still keep the exhaust clean, fine. Even with a buddy with a shop, what happens when you get a notice to go to "test only?" There are a lot of places in Ca where you don't need much of a smog test.
The guys up in the central coast area don't have much of a test, but if you don't live there, it doesn't matter. You can't just chose to register your car at some little mountain town, you have to have an address there. I don't think the DMV will accept a post office box or "general delivery," they want the actual street address where the car will be garaged. If you buy property in some "little mountain town" your set, but it is much cheaper to build the car smog legal and have performance too. My only complaint with the visual part of the smog laws is that many parts that won't pass a visual inspection will still run clean. If you put on a stealth ram or a mini ram, and ran a Corvette style egr with a legal cam, it would pass the tailpipe test, but because they don't have a carb eo#, you flunk.
