Getting the 3rd gen back on the road......

Hey Gang!

Just dropping a line to some old chums from a long time ago. How have all ya been doing? Lon, Don, Kevin, Brett........ Haven't see ya since the last scfb breakfast I think. George L., how come you don't swing by Cruisers any more?

Well, as the thread says, I'm gonna get the old bird running and I'm kinda in a pinch for a 2nd car: Wife's got a GTP to haul around the baby, Grandpa now drives the Sunfire now, and I now have 373 gears along with a 2500 stall TQ converter in the 95 and as a result my mileage sucks! I'm filling the car up like every three days!

I'm having thoughts of getting my 3rd gen road worthy again after a 4 year hiatus. Heres a link to some pics. Some of recent, some of better days for her. Feel free to check out the other gallery of my other cars. pictures of my 1987 Trans Am.........

The tranny went out a good 4 years ago, and its been getting rusty sitting the back yard. All it needs is a working tranny and of couse a tune up!

I just inherited a functional tranny from a fellow enthusiast who had a 3rd gen Iroc and along with Three volunteers, we'll be popping that bad boy in.

Problem I'm having is the car doesn't want to idle. You know how the usual TPI likes to idle high for a few minutes and them comes down to a low idle, usually at 1500 rpm? Well, I just cant get the car to stay running after about 10 seconds after you start it. Wants to stall.

If I press the gas and hold her at 2500 rpm for a minute or two, it will kick in and idle fine. Idled for like 20 minutes just the other day. Its like a cold start thing. Like choke.

Any ideas?

Kevin, Don L. ? You guys are the 3rd gen Gods in my book (that is a complement - I really mean that!!), any thoughts?

Of course I gotta do the oil, fresh plugs, air filter etc. But any sensors or things I should clean? I put only about a quarter can of the Throttle body cleaner in the Throttle body. The label calls for a full can, but I was a one man crew and had to go keep starting up the car as it wouldn't run.

What do you guys clean the MAF sensor with? Would that help?

Thanks guys.

Glad to see you're still out and about, now hurry up and get that puppy running again and come and join us for some fun.
We had a great turnout yesterday for a BBQ and more Firebirds than we have seen in a long time. You and yours are more than welcome to join us anytime.
Cheers,

That is way cool Don. Thanks for the invite!

Glad to hear the third gen clan is running strong. And with lots of birds too.

Had a friend come over today and help with the car. With some finessing of the throttle position sensor, we kinda got her to idle. I remember I messed with that sensor a long time ago and probably never got it back to its correct alignment. I hear that seafoam stuff works wonders. The car feels like its missing so that stuff should help.

I have to say, I'm piecing her back together. Sure she is totally bonified stock (yes, paper filter and oh.....a dynomax muffler...but thats it.) Even took the "air foil" and put it on the fourth gen. None the less, I miss that car. And will be on the road shortly. She's not pretty, but what's that saying: Fast aint always pretty!

Hey Daniel. Sorry I don't swing by Cruiser's anymore ... I am usually bringing home my lady from work, I take her on Fridays. Glad to hear that you are putting the 3rd gen back together ... one 3rd gen goes away, another comes to life. My 3rd gen has been parted out, I don't have room for it where I currently live ... nor do I have/want to spend time on it anymore. Got better things to do with my time. I'll just concentrate on the SS and possibly, when it is paid off, a real race car. Good luck and hope to see you around sometime.

Good stuff man. Very cool. Sorry for your loss. Loss of the Third gen.

Its hard to keep two cars up, I know. Try three. Two TA's and a GTP. Although my wife doesnt want me to touch the GTP. Its her car, but still. LOL. That lil' supercharged 3.8 is just ichin' for some "enhancement".

What happened to 12's?? I remember hearing about you hitting your mark, but what happened? I'm sure you'll be back there soon.

Yeah, I hit 12.89 the first time out with the mods I had, then a 12.80 and then I broke my car (rear and trans). After Don fixed it, I went 12.75. Foolishly I demodded my SS but I will be modding it back with the long tubes and, instead of a MAFT and HPP3, I'll be using LS1-Edit. That should put my SS back in the low 12 at sea level ... plus it will be sporting lighter wheels and driver.

Edit: Some reading for you.

First 12

Another 12.8

trans and rear

Best ET yet
