Well one of my friends bought a GTA. And he was told it was a 350 tpi. The other day he went to buy a water pump and the guy at pepboys told him it was a 305. Can you tell what size it is by the water pump. And is there another way to tell what size it is?

8th digit of the VIN should be 8 for it to be a 350...

 

I think the water pumps are identical. I sure wouldn't go by what a counterman at Pep Boys says. The vin will tell you what engine came in the car, but that doesn't mean it still has the original engine installed. The surest wat to tell is to use a mirror to look at the back of the left bank of the block ( I think it's the left, but it could be right). A 305 will have 5.0 liter stamped into the back of the block. A 350 will have 5.7 liter stamped in the same place.

 

Thats a good way too, but doesn't it only work for the later blocks?

 

Look on the right side of the block above the starter a 305 will have a # in the casting 627 a 350 will have the # 638 (the number is upside down). The # are about 1/2" tall.

 

I may be wrong, but I think that works for any sbc that has dicsplacement measured in liters instead of cubic inches.

 

I work at a NAPA. If somebody came to me and said they had a 86 camaro, (for instance), and said it had a 350, I may be inclined to tell them it was a 305 b/c 350 wasn't offered in that year. The computer gives me different engine options for each car, the only option for v8 in that car would be 305. I wouldn't assume though b/c the engine could be swapped out, and besides, it wouldn't matter b/c it is the same pump!

 

First year of GTA was '87, and they were standard with Auto & 350's. If you can see on the block behind the distributor, like the guys say, it will be 5.0 or 5.7. Also, if it has the heat exchanger under the oil filter, which runs coolant to and from the heater hoses, it is a 350. If it is a manual trans, it is a 305.

...unless someone has swapped things out.
