MAF trouble

Maybe someone can clue me in.

I was getting a code 34 on my 88 350 TPI, so I changed the MAF sensor and the code 34 went away, but now I am getting a code 33 instead

Do I check the voltage of terminal C of the MAF connector with the MAF disconnected or connected with jumper wires?

Any and ALL suggestions are welcomed and appreciated before I drop the car off for the 'test only smog check.'

Thanks

Your problem isn't MAF, it's the MAF relays. Code 34 is the Power Relay and Code 33 is the Burn Off Relay.

On an '88 they are located on the firewall, right next to the brake booster. They are the two oval shaped relays. I'd have to check my GM manual to remember which is which. You identify them by the number of wires each has.

New relays will run you about $7 each.

Re: MAF trouble

BretD 88GTA is right I had the same codes spent a fortune on the MAF and it was only a relay.

Re: MAF trouble

thanks for your help, i've been away from the computer for the past week.

well i got the relays and iam still getting the code 34 with one maf and code33 with the maf off of of ebay (used). the car runs great so I have that going for me. i have to take it in to the "test only" smog check though. will the smog tech care that the check engine light is on if it passes the sniffer?

as for the MAF, should i check anything else before i cough up cash for a brand new MAF? thanKs again.

Weird. A bad MAF sets a different code. Code 36 IIRC.

Code 33 and 34 usually indicate the relays. You might double-check the wiring to make sure nothing is creating a bad signal.

Re: MAF trouble

36 is burnoff. Any one of the 3 can indicate a bad MAF, but that doesnt mean the MAF is bad. The ECM isnt that smart, it just sees bad data and points a finger. Definitely check the wiring, not only will the wires expose themselves over time at the relay connections, the electric fans have a tendency to eat MAF wiring as well.

Chris is right – got my codes switched around.
36 = MAF Burn-off

33 & 34 = Voltage problems with the MAF. Code 34 usually means the power relay is bad. Code 33 could indicate a bad MAF.

Again, double-check the wiring and connections first before dropping $$$ on a new MAF.
