its almost time to rebuild my engine!!

I own a 1991 Camaro rs I have close to 200.000 miles on my 305 TBI engine its almost time for a rebuilt. some one told me that it’ll be better to buy the engine straight from the dealer. so with that said around how much would it cost for a factory manufactured engine? it doesn’t have to be right on point but just a rough estimate. thank you

Re: its almost time to rebuilt my engine!!

Most of the Crate engines are complete drop in assemblies including an intake manifold and carburetor that you would need to throw away because they are not legal in Ca. for our cars. Go to the bottom of the page and click on "crate engines" in the "search by parts" list. The G.M. Performance Parts Economy Engine comes as a long block. You would just put your acessories from your old engine on it and be ready to go. The rest of the engines listed seem to be complete engines. The next engine on the list a 350ci/330 hp 350HO engine has Vortec heads which would require you to get an Edelbrock manifold for your tbi and custom fabricate a Corvette style egr set up.

The prices vary by the intended use of the engine. If you are looking for a lot of power and possibly installing a power adder such as a blower or nitrous, you need a forged crank, forged rods, forged pistons, and 4 bolt mains. If you are looking to keep your car stock, you will gain some power because you will be replacing a 305 with a 350; but the engine listed for $1700.00 will have pretty much what you stock original engine had. You want a "long block" rather than a "crate engine" because most crate engines include a carburetor or non emissions compliant fuel injection that will add from $500.00-$2000.00 to the price and must be discarded.

An advantage to ordering from Pace or SD is that both are out of state. Technically, you are supposed to notify California when you order from out of state and pay California the sales tax, but California has no way of checking to see what you have ordered from out of state or of following up on the sales tax. Various state with California in the lead have tried to force companies to report sales to California residents so that they could come after us for sales tax, but the Supreme Court has always ruled such laws unconstitutional because one state does not have the right to pass laws that are binding on a person or business in another state.

This engine:
http://paceperformance.com/index.asp...D&ProdID=42937
is about the best you can get to work with the stock TBI computer. You could replace the cam with one from a L98 or LT1 engine for a little more power. You could also get the Edelbrock TBI intake manifold, which is an upgrade over the stock one.

Re: its almost time to rebuild my engine!!

Kevin, I just opened the link you posted to the Pace engine. Can he just transfer his parts to the Lt1 or is he going to need to get either a new water pump or a different accessory drive?

Good grief, there is a ton of misinformation on that site.

The picture is right......but not much else.

Re: its almost time to rebuild my engine!!

I dont see where you guys are getting that the engine description has bad info. Only the title at the top of the browser says its an LT1-P engine. Everything else in the middle says its a regular 350 SBC for 91-94 Caprices, not an LT1.

Re: its almost time to rebuild my engine!!

Misidentifying it as an LT1-P is bad info. Wasn't the LT1 the engine installed in 93-94 Caprices. I suspect the Caprice did not get the LT1 in 91 or 92 for the same reason that the F-body did not get the LT1 in those years.

Re: its almost time to rebuild my engine!!

I've used the 12513151 engine before. It's a good replacement engine for the camaro.

LT1's were in Caprices from 94-96.
