Problems with my 98 GMC Sierra
The truck has a 305 TBI Vortec motor. The problem started out in the desert after towing a few dirt bikes out there. Not sure if this matters but this is where the issue first began. My truck seems to have problems starting on cold mornings. Originally when the issue appeared i would have to crank it 3 times before it started. The first two times the idle would be at about 300 when trying to start and shut off then on the 3rd try it cranked right up as if nothing was wrong. I have since changed the gas filter, new plugs, new cap and rotor. After changing these parts the truck started up fine. But now it has progressively gotten worst. This morning I had to crank it about 10 times until it finally started. But once it starts I can turn it back off and it will crank right up without an issue. I can leave the truck parked at work all day long and it will crank right up when I get ready to go home 8 hrs later.
A friend of mine says it may be that my coil is going bad. Any other suggestions? Also there is no check engine light on.

Does it smell gassy. It could be cold start flooding. or the cold start might not be engaging.

No it does not smell like gas. Cold start not engaging makes sense and sounds cheaper then bad fuel pump. How can I go about checking the cold start?

check your fuel pressure, specially on those occasions when its hard to start, we've had to replace 2 pumps on an astro van and 1 on a suburban from what i've been told those pumps are usually bad. My brothers silverado does the same thing as your truck, it takes a few cranks to start when cold, so far it hasn't bothered him enough to spend 300 bucks on a replacement pump. i would check the fuel pressure though

Today I cycled the key on and off about 5 times and would let the fuel pump prime each time. Then I finally went to start it and it cranked over without an issue.

sound like fuel pressure, check the relay too...
BTW I got that engine u sold me to run... Its a very stout 305, I tossed in some 24lb injectors with a afpr and the underdrive pully that was attached on there. That sucker really revs up. I really want to thank you for selling me that engine.

Nice Remind me which engine you bought? I remember dropping off a lb9 motor in pasadena but that was through craigslist. Or did you buy an l03 from me?
