im just talking about the intake, manifold up. The only thing is is that i have an early block, would all the bolt holes line up? Would i have to buy new heads too? just a crazy idea, thanks

The LS1 is completely different from any other block that came before. Although you might be able to machine the block and/or heads and intake to fit is would be an enormous project. It uses a different number and configuration of head bolts and the intake bolts to the heads different too. You would spend many times more time and money trying to match LS1 parts to a small block than you would just buying and adapting an entire LS1 to fit your Camaro.

It could be done, but there would have to be some custom machine work done. Probably nobody would touch the idea, you'd have to know someone who knows you are off your rocker and willing to take a shot in the dark trying it. Worse than all that is you'd have to get a custom cam, and the cheapest anyone will do it for if they even will (so far anyway) is $750 to Comp cams. That right there kinda kills the idea unless you're looking for a conversation piece. And, as far as I know nobody has attempted it yet... it might not work properly.

Sounds like what people said before the LT1 intake swap was done....

While I don't know much about the LS1 intake, if someone had one laying around it would be interesting to see if the intake could be made to fit. It maybe very well be simply something like the LT1 swap, or... completely impossible... anyone with a spare LS1 intake want to find out??? lol

As for the rest of the motor... why bother? just get some good aftermarket stuff.

I wish I knew someone with an LS1 with the intake off, it would be worth looking at.

Its composite plastic. You cant grind on it or shape it to fit without ruining it. But if you want to try, go right ahead.

Considering I have an LS1 and an SBC I can clearly tell you (unlike the LT1 manifold) it will not work. The port alignement from the LS type engine and conventional Small Block Chevys doesn't line up, look below for a port layout diagram:

LS-type engine:
I_E_I_E_I_E_I_E
I_E_I_E_I_E_I_E

Conventional SBC (including LT-type) engines:
E_I_I_E_E_I_I_E
E_I_I_E_E_I_I_E

As you can see you need to seriousl;y modifiy the LS-type manifold to line up with a conventional SBC. That is still not including you will need an access hole for the distributor, which the LS-type engine does allow for (you'll have to poke into the plenum). Plus as Chris mentioned a new camshaft.

Hmm oh well... Now what would really be kinda cool is an LT1 style intake made of the same stuff as the LS! intake. But thats just IMO :-)

Its not impossible, just not cost effective. The intake will not bolt up to the SBC heads no matter what you do, the ports are symmetrical not in pairs. The LS1 has a taller deck height than a SBC and you'd have to mill .020 off the intake or heads to get it to line up right. To even attempt it, you'd need at a minimum the LS1 heads, intake, headers (if they fit, I dunno), and then you'd need a custom cam, some custom block work, probably custom pistons (valve relief problems), and I am 95% sure the distributor wont clear the plenum, in which case you need some sort of DIS setup. The LS1 cam will not work, nor will the pistons or a whole host of other items. For most purposes, its an entirely different engine and nothing is interchangeable even with money and a crazy idea. Hopefully the prices will continue to drop on complete setups. Just pray those 4th genners keep totaling their cars
