Smog Combos??
Smog Combos??
Ok, im gonna be getting my hands on a 1987 Iroc-Z with the 350 TPI in it. The setup under the hood is all stock at the moment. I wanna push 300-350hp, but still have to pass smog. My goal is to run in the low 13's on the 1/4 mile. What kind of suggestions do you have for me? Does anybody have a car that runs like this and passes smog fine?
I have no problem investing some money, but what order should i go when it comes to the upgrades?

That shouldn't be too difficult. Kevin is in the high twelves with a 350 now. He's running a set of Corvette aluminum heads with the lt4 hot cam. He had to run a Corvette style egr, since the heads don't have egr passages. He's also running a large base and runners with a proted plenum. Kevin's dad, Don, is building a 350 with Vortec heads, and the new Scoggin-Dickey Vortec/tpi base. Chevy High Performance built up a goodwrench 350 with Trick Flow 23* heads, and got 416 hp out of it. They did that with a Holley carb, but a tpi should do as well. Again, you would probably need a large base, large runners, and a proted plenum to get the max out of any tpi combo on a 350.

I was going to respond with "Huh?" I'm glad you noticed. Yeah I was freaking out when they were doing my emissions check. I was scared that it wouldn't pass and would have to pay through the nose to have a diagnostic done. Thank goodness everything was done correctly! The car runs like a dream, and actually had better results than the stock engine! (Go figure!)

I suppose that the former owner of the car didn't take too well care of the stock engine, for the oil pump went out on it a few months after I bought the car. Now I have a nice setup and a very strong engine that will last me for years!

The ZZ4 cam is cakewalk compared to the LT4 HOT cam. You'll have no trouble passing with it. But like anything, its all a combination of parts. If something is out of tune, it will affect everything else.
