Brakes take too long

Ok I have never done my brakes before, I haven't had any problems until now. On my 89 GTA, it feels like the brakes take a while to "kick in" I press the brake pedal all way (like when parralel parking) and it is sometimes still moving for a second. The front and rear brake pads have about 1000 miles on them. Help!

I don't quite understand? Did you change the brakes, or are you asking if you need to change the brakes?

Kinda hard to say, but is there play in the pedal? Does it go to the floor?
