Anyone cut their front bumper out to loose weight

I was looking into cutting my front bumper out to loose some MORE weight and was just wondering if anyone as attempted it yet...It looks like you'd have to make some kind of support to keep the front bumper cover from sagging...

The urethane bumper cover would do fine without the steel bumper behind it.

You sure you want to drive on the street like that? Damn, that'd be a hell of an accident.

My front and rear bumpers have been removed but my car is also a race car and isn't street legal. My plastic doesn't sag. There's still a few mounting points that keep it up.

Thankz for the info ...I'm either gonna take it out or holesaw it to death...A lot of my friends who have mustangs have taken out their front bumper and it weights A LOT and the the one in my car looks like it's gonna weigh a lot more...A few people have said to make some aluminum supports to help support the nose because when you go over 100mph it starts to disform

There was an article a few years ago in Hot Rod that showed how the bumpers of the "big guys" were deforming as they ran the 1/4. One guy's hood was even curling!

thats pretty good eyesight if you can see your bumper cover disform at 100mph. if you make a brace for it, bolt it to the support and have it touch the underside of the cover where the camaro emblem is so it doenst make a mark in the paint. I was going to do this but my conscience said dont do it. I still wish i would have but maybe a voice is trying to tell me something for the future.

haha my buddy took out his front reinforcment bar on his 96 eclipse so he could fit an aftermarket front mount intercooler. the only thing holding the front bumper cover on is some wire ties. now his only line of efense in an accident is the plastic cover and the intercooler lol

i had my bumper cover and bumper off to put my new cam in. let me say this, its worth the weight to keep it if it is a street driven car, its not even that heavy. on my car, its also where the fog/parking lights are mounted, and i could never get rid of those, i love the way my car looks with just those on and not the headlights.

when i swapped my 90 front cover for one off a 84 i had to chang ethe bumper itself, but the parts car i got it off had an aluminum bumper on it, weighed half of the steel one. i believe the early 4 cylinder cars and some v6's had the aluminum bumper.

Here's a pic of a 3rd gen pontiac after a high speed pass, with a deformed front fascia (bumper/crash bar removed):

Keep in mind that this is probably only an issue if you're exceeding 130 mph or so. I have my front bumper removed also, and I'm experiencing cracks in the paint on my fascia, indicating signs of collapse (trap speeds in the mid 140 mph range). Will be fabbing and installing a lightweight chromoly tube brace in the near future.

I looked at a picture of my front bumper when I was replacing the clip. I'm not seeing where anyone could remove material from it to lighten it, but keep its strength.

Did camaros come with the aluminum bumper? I thought that was only birds and ta's? Or is it the same?

same day, not his fault, just one of thoes rare unpreventable accidents, a car ran a redlight as he was going thru the intersection at only 35ish....

totaled the car.

our cars are worth peanuts, they get totaled very easily. if you have THAT much money into a car, and are not willing to chance loosing it, get agree'd value insurance, or something that protects your investment. bumper supports or not, there are alot of thirdgens that are totaled in 35mph wrecks.

heck just about any car over 10+years old will get totalled in a fenderbender when you look at the wholesale cost of the car they are worthless but its not worthless to the owner ...it sucks whenyou loose your baby because some dumb insurance agent hasnt the slightest clue what a camaro is worth or even looks like for that matter...LOL...it sucks

yup, the other you need to do, is inform your insurace of the fact your car is modified, although some insurance companies will drop you, but it is better to be dropped for being honest, than to find out they won't cover you because of modifications. I am total honest with my agent, they know how i use the car, and they know what is done with it. my policy also reflects it, and even my colosion coverage ammounts are WELL above the cost of a camaro. this also helps when you get hit. the coversation went something like this.

Adjuster: Mr. Dewey, we will be totaling out your 1990 Camaro
Me: How much will i be receving for the car?
Adjuster: $3200, which is the high book value
Me: Well Sir, My car is insured for $XX,000 with my insurance company, to cover modifications, and to reflects its true value, If you would like, i can fax a copy of my policy, and reciepts for the parts. But if you prefer, feel free to find me a Blue, 1990 RS, with a V8 and 5speed in the same condition as my car prior to your client hitting it, and then just re-emburse me for the receipts that i will be faxing.
Adjuster: Ohh, well, uhmm, let me, ohh, lets do this, just take your car to a shop of your choice, we will cover it.
Me: Thank you.
