Removing the steering wheel from a GTA

Hey guys, I have to fix the problem with my steering wheel wiggling up and down and all around.

I read the Haynes manual on this, but since the GTA steering wheels came with the stereo controls built onto the steering wheel, so it has no info on it.

Any ideas as to what additional steps I should take?

The center of the wheel containing the controls is Velcro in place and is connected by two wire connectors after you have pulled the center section out. Under the controls is one large nut that needs to be removed. Once you remove the nut brace your knees behind the wheel on opposite sides and wiggle the wheel until it comes off.

Good luck!

Great info, thanks!

Should I have to disconnect the battery at all before I start unplugging the wires?

It is always a good idea, however this is only connectors so it probably won't matter.

Like he said, the buttons are on with velcro - just pull it off. The connector on the bottom and on the right just pull off. The connector at the top left needs to be turned a little and then pull out (spring inside).

Voila!

I used a wheel puller to get mine off. It was on there good!

Your welcome but it really will only take 15 - 20 minutes. I just took pics at each step in case someone might need it.

Do you think it will actually come out with the knee trick? Even if the wheel has been on there since 1989? I'll have to give this a try...
Thanks for the info and awesome pics!!!

Speaking of wheels. Would you guys get the original one redone in leather (mine is shreaded) or would you just stick an aftermarket GRANT type wheel on there. I'm contemplating it. I like the look of the stock wheel (even though I've changed the stock deck to a Pioneer large face wich came with a steering wheel mounted remote). I like the look of the stock wheel though (lighted buttons are trick..lol.) I wonder how much it would cost to rewrap a leather wheel.
Anyone have any info?
Thanks in advance.

I'd get it redone in leather, IMO it looks better.

But everyone has different tastes.

How much are the Grant signature wheels. I'm guessing they're just as much as the MOMO's correct? Looks great man!

Thanks!

Most of the Grant Signature wheels are $160 - $180.
