4th gen rear, is it worth it?
4th gen rear, is it worth it?
I am considering swapping in a 4th gen rear into my 85 Camaro. Obviously this is a pretty easy swap, but what I'm wondering are what advantages does it have over the 3rd gen 10 bolt I already have, other than (the one I'm looking at) having 3.42 gears and posi? Can it take more abuse than the third gen rear?? If I'm going to spend $350 on a rear and $100 on a proportioning valve, maybe I should just save my pennies and get a Moser 12bolt?? Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

$100 on a proportioning valve? You can get the Wilwood adjustable for 39 bucks from Summit. If you eventually want to get a 12 bolt, then yea, it might be a good idea to save your money now instead of wasting it on the 4th gen rear just so you can swap it out again.

The 4th gen rear end is 2" longer on each side. So if your ever gonna put rims. You can atcually rotate their rims from front to back. Also if your gonna put 4th gen rims. You dont have to use spacers.

considerably stronger would be a 12 bolt
which is also $$$$
main reason i got my is cuz i'm trying to get the most bang for the buck outta my Z28, and cuz i wanted rear discs and something better than 2.73's
2.73's+f-body=

I did this swap last year. I went from drum to a 4th gen disc rear. the 4th gen rear is no stronger then the third gen one. If you are going from drum to disc then yes you will need new E brake cables. You will need cables from a 1992 camaro first design. They are about $20 each and you need two of them. You will also need a new propotioning valve.
